Udon West Opens in Old Teriyaki Boy Space

DSC00235

Last September it was reported that the shuttered Teriyaki Boy (on 46th btw. Lex+3rd) would become a Japanese noodle shop, and surprisingly it has happened in the time frame they specified. Udon West has opened in the old Teriyaki Boy space, serving up 13 different bowls of Udon under $10. They also have teriyaki, curry, and combinations (although the combinations are all over $10), and I believe they are the same Udon West with locations in Flushing and on St. Marks in the East Village. It will be interesting to see how this place competes with Menchanko Tei, one block over on 45th btw. Lex+3rd…. but at least while the  weather is still cold I’m guessing there is room for both. Let the soup wars begin! Early adopters, let us know how it is in the comments.

A shot of the pretty nice interior is after the jump…

  • Why is it called Udon West when it’s on the east side?

  • I imagine it’s west compared to the “Far East”

  • LOL@dubbin–typical NYC-centric view! :*)

I miss that Teriyaki Boy–there should be more TBs in the city. Although then new interior looks MUCH nicer.

  • It’s ok, nothing special. Soup was good, noodles mediocre, fried chicken slightly subpar. Their operational process in taking orders, providing the actual take out, giving the bill, accepting payment, is terrible. I hope they learn from today and change how they process customers.

  • Went during dinner time. Perhaps it was because they were less busy, but the processing of customers was fine. Friendly staff and tasty food on a cold night. Because of the open kitchen and fried foods, smells will linger on your clothes.

Soup broth pretty good, Katsu Don with egg wasn’t dry, but salty and good variety of sides.

I go to Udon West all the time and I love their Udon with Marinated Beef and Kimchee (so delicious)!
They also make very good Extra Crispy Beef Dumplings.
The staff is friendly (even the cooks) and very professional.
I have gone around the corner a couple of times to Menchanko Tei’s, but found their food to be only so-so and the pork in their ramen soup is 90% fat and inedible.
I will stick to Udon West from now on.

  • Me and a number of colleagues recently ate at this restaurant and sat in the back/oustide section of the restaurant. We ordered, ate and and while we were paying we noticed a huge dead RAT lying against one of the walls. We all immediately shot up and left, we did pay however.

I will not be returning here.
