PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Ted”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week, it’s Ted- a web geek who is looking for a long lunch.

Name: Ted

Age: 32

Occupation: Web geek

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Rockefeller Center

Favorite Kind of Food: Anything pork-related or pork-adjacent. I’ll pretty much eat anything, except for…

Least Favorite Kind of Food: … Liver, kidneys, or any internal animal organs. Tripe I’ll eat tho.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Hing Won (on 48th btw. 5+6th), hands down. And the yellow DOH stickers don’t scare me at all, though I get grief from my co-workers about it. (“Hi, co-workers!”) I eat there at least 3 times a week for breakfast and/or lunch. I’m also partial to El Rincon del Sabor on 47th btw. 6+7th (the morcilla is great!), Cafe Cello on 45th btw. 5+6th (mmmm, pork skin), Sapporo on 49th btw. 6+7th (miso ramen!), and the street meat cart downstairs from my building on 47th and 6th.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Subway. Can’t go wrong with $5 footlong sandwiches. Although the knife in the bread incident a couple of months ago did turn me off for a few weeks. The co-workers go for Wendy’s, Cafe Metro, and Chipotle a lot as well, pretty much because it’s quick and close by.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Sapporo, Cafe Cello, Cafe Spice (I’m as partial to buffets as you are, Zach), Cafe Duke on 50th btw. 6+7th (that soon tubu is great but burns you from the inside.) Oh and the BF thanks you for the Mexican Cart on the East side (60th and 3rd), and using a picture of him for your post. And I just checked out the Mexican Cart myself yesterday on my way to running an errand at the Container Store. Totally delish! Reminds me of the taco stands in Jackson Heights, except the tacos are $1 instead of $2.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? In Manhattan, it would have to be Chinatown. 4-dish lunches for under $5 every day? Sign me up. In all of NYC, probably Jackson Heights or Flushing… plenty of cheap options in JH for every type of cuisine, and 5 Mexican carts within throwing distance of the subway station. Flushing, because the food is a little more authentic, and it’s where I grew up. Internationally, probably Paris. They have mandated 2-hour lunches, and they give certain businesses lunch vouchers to patronize the local eateries. Yay, socialism! Singapore as well… I can’t find mince-pork noodle anywhere here.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Where’s the best long-lunch place to go that won’t break the bank? Most sit down places either rush you out the door or you pay out of your nose for the ambience.

If I have all the time in the world, I think my favorite lunch is Szechuan Gourmet (on 39th btw. 5+6th) and it’s still in the Midtown Lunch price range, even though it’s a sit down restaurant (with 2 stars from the New York Times!) Got a recommendation for Ted? Leave it in the comments.

And as always, if you want to be the next Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er, or you’d like to nominate somebody in your office email me at zach@midtownlunch.com

  • Ted, you should also try Taki Sushi (48th btw. 5th+6th). 3 rolls for $10 plus miso soup & salad. Can’t go wrong if you’re on a budget. :-)

  • DocChuck isn’t in right now to supply his homophobic ravings in response to this entry, as he is out photographing (his new telephoto lens is perfectly suited to his restraining order – great clarity at 1000 yards – if such things excite you) young boys in a playground hoping someone’s pants will slip off while on the slide or somesuch. But he will be back soon to comment, worry not!

  • I second Taki Sushi (though they stop refilling your tea at some point as an attempt to push you out the door). I also enjoy Maison (53rd and 7th).

  • Taki is a great deal but the sushi isn’t very good. Aoki on 48th and 8th is a similar deal but the fish is better.

  • I recommend Cho Dang Gol [http://chodanggolny.com/]

the only thing inside of midtown lunch prices are the tofu soup ~10 bucks. It may seem like a lot but you also get side dishes!

  • OMG, Ted I went to elementary school with you!

  • Ted:

Get thee to HAIRCLUB before it’s too late.

  • shut up, DocChuck.

Ted, nice writeup. you seem cool. i, too, recommend szechuan gourmet — the quality is awesome, ambiance is lovely, and if you split plates (which, you totally can) it won’t break the bank. Also, empanada mama on 9th ave and 51st street is cheap, tasty, and fun for sit-down.

  • What my dear husband meant is that you can now order custom hair pieces (if such things excite you) made from only the finest animal hair straight from the hairpiece division of my pet hair removal firm. We can usually even give you a choice of species – we have in our catalog several different types of dog, several long and short haired cats, rabbit, mongoose, skunk, possum, and (in a special purchase from some “hunters” from Georgia) american bigfoot (some freezer damage). At Twitchy’s insistence, sorry, no hamster. Act now, and we’ll throw in free dinner at a local korean bistro where you and a guest will be able to dine on the REST of the creature whose hair you chose.

  • My dearest Shauna:

Feel free to address me when you can spell and punctuate correctly on your own blog.

    Cheers,

    Chuck, PhD

  • oh wow. that hurt.

  • Trust me, all you are getting from him is some harsh words. Consider for a moment what *I* have to go through. His idea of getting ready for the holidays, for example…….He’s currently working on obtaining a suit of clothes exactly like those worn by the kid in “A Christmas Story” who got his tongue frozen to a lamppost. He’s already had the lampost delivered, and intends to use crazy glue to simulate the freezing of the tongue to the lamppost, and then after he gets me suited up and stuck to the lamppost……well……I think you see where this is heading

  • HA. okay okay, all beef is forgiven when the blow-up doll opens her mouth. or sticks out her tongue… er, um, ick.
