Today May Be a Good Day For Cold Noodles
It’s freakin’ hot as shit outside (can I say that?) That means Japanese Ramen places are rolling out the cold noodles. I’m pretty sure Menchanko Tei (55th btw. 5+6th & 45th btw. Lex+3rd) always has Hiyashi Chuka on their menu, but Men Kui Tei (56th btw. 5+6th) and Sapporo (49th btw. 6+7th) only serve it in the summer time. And I think it’s pretty safe to say… it’s summertime. (I called to confirm… all three restaurants are serving it.
But the most exciting news is after the jump…
Korean cold noodles are finally available in Midtown! Pro Hot Korean on 56th btw. 5+6th is serving Naeng Myeon, the Korean version of Hiyashi Chuka. I haven’t tried them yet, but if it’s as good as their dolsot bi bim bap, it should be good enough!

MY Fave Summer time cooler is a VERY tall glass with 3 fingers of Grey Goose topped with olde worlde lemonade and crushed ice………….food in hot weather?……… it’s unheathly. i give you texas as an example of what can happen.

this may be out of bounds but Sakagura- a neat little hideaway in the basement of a blah midtown office building on 43rd between 1st and 2nd ave- has a great lunch specials daily of handmade soba noodles (hot or cold, your choice) and a rice dish of some sort.
there’s also the new Soba Totto, but it’s overpriced for what it is.
Seo, also out of bounds on 49th between 1st and 2nd aves has cold “inaniwa” udon, the best kind of udon noodles from Japan. kinda pricey, but worth it if you’re in the mood for a little luxury.

Vodka lemonade I think may be the perfect summer drink. I agree I have a hard time eating when its so hot out – and cold food doesn’t seem that appealing to me anyways.

anyone got a good recommendation for a cold soba salad somewhere between 45 & 60th or park and 8th ave ?

For nang myun on Kstreet, I would say the best I’ve encountered is DaeDong. They make their noodles by hand. You have to hurry, though. It’s turning into a tofu house soon.

Ugh, the term “cold noodle” has an entirely different meaning for me.

Thanks to your timely suggestion, we ordered Naeng Myeon from Pro Deli.
To our delight, they have free delivery and were willing to modify the naeng myeon to our vegetarian palates. The order was taken by Jane and was delivered in less than one-half hour. We also ordered a side of kim chi. Miso was included as a bonus, but was dilute and a scanty four ounces…not really needed on a 93 degree day.The naeng myeon was generous…I’d guess nearly a pound in weight. Thin, light cold noodles with a piquant sauce and flakes of chilies abundantly stirred in. Julienned veggies, including zucchini and carrots, slices of apple and a few squares of a gelatin-like material (any help in identifying this would be appreciated). We were fully satisfied and agree that this was the perfect heat wave meal. Thanks!

famdoc, the broth for naeng myun is usually beef broth flavored with other seasonings. Was the noodles served in a vegetable broth base?

I told Jane at Pro Deli that we wanted the naeng myeon done vegetarian and she seemed confident that she could do it. The sauce was really light and I doubt it contained meat broth, but I’ll check with her next time I order.

For real?! Nangmyun in Midtown?!??! My expectations are high… let me know how it is at Pro! :D
