You’re all entitled to your opinion, but as the girl who ate 6 different cheesesteaks in about 6 hours in Philly last year, I’m going to veto all your thoughts.
And the cheesesteaks in NYC generally suck hard.

Sorry but Carl’s Steaks is good but there is a place that is exceptional and could open across from Pat’s and Geno’s in South Philly.
It is Shaggy’s Original Cheesesteak. Their steaks taste like they were msde on Passyunk Avenue. They are on Hylan Blvd. in Staten Island. A bit out of the way but not as far as South Philly but as good.

Pat’s & Geno’s suck hard (no disrespect to the departed), and it’s easier for most of us to get to Philly than it is to get to Staten Island. :P

There’s also a lot more to do once you’re in Philadelphia than if you spent the time to go to Staten Island.
Pat’s and Geno’s both make terrible cheesesteaks, and they’re higher-priced than most of the other places in Philly. As with any discussion that mentions cheesesteaks, however, this thread could easily devolve into a “my place is better!” thread of hundreds of comments.

I did not say that Pat’s and Geno’s are the best. But I consider them excellent. My favorite is:

Pat’s and Geno’s are terrible examples of good Philly cheesesteak. Carl’s should definitely do better than the two classics knowns in the cheesesteak world. Jim’s Steaks on South is much better. Also touristy but I like it. I want to go back to get Ishkabibbles.
I strongly disagree with Carl’s being up to par.
