Underneath the Generic Look, Omar’s Kitchen & Bakery Serves Up Tasty Food
Lunch’er Joer tipped us off on a brand new place that serves Mediterranean food. Omar’s Kitchen and Bakery (55th btw. Lex+3rd) just opened couple days ago seems like a very generic place. But don’t let that fool you because the sandwich that I got packed loads of great flavors. As I was leaving, I told one of the workers that I’ll definitely be back and I wasn’t lying.
The menu at Omar’s wasn’t very extensive nor did it sound exciting but that was alright. You have the choice of kabobs, burgers, grilled meats, salads, sides and soups. Everything was $8.95 and under, great!
I went with the kaufta pita ($6.50) and it had a layer of hummus, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, 3 kauftas and sauce. It was fresh, flavorful, tasty, perfectly seasoned and most important of all it was not messy to eat.
Towards the back was the bakery section. While I was admiring all the baked goods and cakes, one of the people working there told me that these were all baked in-house.
Omar’s Kitchen and Bakery might seem like just another place to get kabobs but it is definitely trying to be more with the desserts being made on the premise and the great care they have for their foods. While waiting for my food, a guy ordered the meat shawarma platter. Instead of just slicing the meat that was spinning on the vertical pit and putting it on the plate, the cook cooked it on the grill with onions. It smelled fantastic (I am so going to get that next time). And the place looked really nice and clean. Wooden floors, wooden counter and leather covered seats!
The + (What somebody who likes this would say)
- Even after tax, the food is still under $10.
- The place is clean.
- Extra plus points for having meat on a vertical pit and then cooking it again with onions.
- Desserts in the back, super convenient.
The – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)
- Too damn clean.
- I hate onions.
- The desserts look too generic.
