California Sandwich Shop “Submarina” Coming Soon

Thanks to Lunch’er “Marissa” for letting us know about this one… Submarina, a 30+ year old San Diego based sandwich chain with a branch in Astoria, will be opening its first Manhattan location next to Pro Hot Korean (on 56th btw. 5+6th). Here’s hoping it will be better than Subway! Although their website doesn’t really give us much hope… we’ll try to reserve judgement until after they open, but it’s hard when their owners take pride in the fact that when they first opened they had “no experience, no capital and by every rule of business we should have failed. We didn’t know an avocado from prosciutto, but we were willing to learn.” Really guys? I play the “I’m just a fat guy who likes to eat” card more than anybody… but seriously? You didn’t know the difference between an avocado and proscuitto? That’s kind of silly.

According to the sign you can get a free 6″ sub by signing up for their “Best Sub Club”.  Anybody tried the location in Astoria?  Let us know how it is in the comments…

  • Wow, they freely admit they don’t know anything about business… That explains why they’re opening up RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO A SUBWAY. I mean really? They better be damn good since there are generic deli’s on the block, and oh yeah A SUBWAY RIGHT NEXT DOOR.

… Then again, I’d probably go there over Subway since I hate Subway.

    • I hear that and can fully appreciate it. I’ll go without anything to eat before eating a sandwich/sub at Subway. Started off okay as an establishment but went down hill fast and in my opinion is still heading in that same direction.

  • F’ this noise! I want a Jersey Mike’s, which subsequently out classes their 30 years by a paltry 24 more.

  • I actually Lenny’s subs

  • Considering that they dedicate half the space on their splash page to selling franchises, I will pass until I read or hear something positive about the actual food.

I pass by the one in Astoria but never tried it. It is a counter inside a Hagen Daas store and my impression based on the signage is that it’s a shitty rest-stop sandwich type place.

    I disagree with Tony_P.
Before you comment on something, you should try it.
Their food is awesome, great customer service and it is clean.
I love to be there, at least much better than subway.
