PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Jason”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. Today it’s Jason, an investment banker dude who (like the rest of us this week) wishes he was lunch’ing in Austin.

Name: Jason

Age: 30

Occupation: Programmer Analyst

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Investment Bank in Midtown proper – 47th/Madison

Favorite Kind of Food: Sweets. Dinner last night was a dozen cookies.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Vegetable matter.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Onya (on 47th btw. Lex+3rd) has become my winter friend – I love the fresh noodles here. Oleg and his schnitzel truck broke my heart when they left 48th/Park but I occasionally track them down. With spring approaching I’ll get back to Daisy May’s (on 50th btw. 6+7th), Kati Roll (on 39th btw. 5+6th), Cafe Cello (on 46th btw. 5+6th) and similarly distant locations (5th to 6th is the longest block ever).

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Joy Indian (on 46th btw. Lex+3rd) – better than Maharaja (on 45th btw. Lex+3rd) but still exemplifies the lackluster east side Indian cuisine selection.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Too many to list as I’ve been a reader for years. I’d have to say Zach really did open my eyes to cart food – and the recent El Rey Del Sabor ‘secret’ pork tacos have become a new favorite along with their pastalillos.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Austin, TX – amazing flautas in spicy tomatillo broth (http://twitpic.com/vr37n) at the Screaming Goat and a trailer park eatery (texas sized carts) where you can get Cakeballs which are truly one of man’s greatest innovations.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Are there any better Indian food places on the east side? I know of the ‘Indian Fast Food’ cart but that’s about it. Also, best afternoon dessert?

Got a recommendation for Jason? Put it in the comments… and as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email zach@midtownlunch.com.

  • PREEMPTIVE: SHUT UP FRED!

  • Dozen cookies for dinner? Cheeeeeeeese, I think you should let Fred out of his cage this week for this one!

  • no mention of the bbq or tacos in Austin?? FAIL!

  • Best afternoon dessert is probably anything chocolate for me but a cookie and coffee at Cucina in Met building for 95 cents isn’t bad!!

And I think that’s the only indian cart around these parts. I rather walk to the west side for Biryani Cart though.

  • FREAK OF THE WEEK

(the only persons who can cage me are Wilma and Pebbles)

  • ayce buffet at Darbar on 46 between 3rd and Lex. Might be $11, but it’s ayce. Really good. There’s another take out place, pretty good, 44th off 3rd towards Lex. Think it’s called 44 something something. A few Indian on that 46th block. I still like Darbar.

  • Good indian on the east side? Look north, my friend. Brick Lane on 53rd or Amma on 51st (lunch specials in the ML price range).

    • whats the deal with Mint? is it any good?

      • 53rd bw 2nd & 3rd also has Tadka (they give so much food!)
        58th bw 2nd & 3rd has Dawat
        I believe 59th or 58th has Chola
then there’s darbar, bukhara grill, bombay bistro.. so on and so forth. this area’s jam packed with indian spots that have amaaazing lunch specials.

  • Cheese is like our chatroulette pianist, lol

  • a dozen cookies..cookie monster t-shirt…i see.

  • everyone loves Kati roll =)

  • for AYCE Indian try Indigo on 50th near 1st. I think it’s 8.95. not a huge spread but hot, fresh, friendly and well worth the money. usually plenty of empty seats for a relaxing lunch.

out of bounds, but I think you’re close enough.
