Sit-In/Riot Ensues After Midtown KFC Stops Taking Free Food Coupons

Yesterday tons of complaints streamed in from all over the country from people having trouble downloading the free chicken coupon from KFC (which you still should be able to download until tonight at 11pm.)  Today, complaints came in from Midtown Lunch’ers trying to redeem those coupons.  Lunch’er Tony checked in around 12:20pm today with this comment: “On line at 42nd/Mad location now, manager just announced they hit their limit and will not be honoring coupons.”  Things seemed crazy at the 50th & 7th location as well.  via Lunch’er “Win” just before 1 pm: “Just got back from 50th & 7th ave – there was about 50 ppl crammed into a very tiny space before me .. will try again much earlier on another day. The mgr said “while supplies last” so I wouldn’t even attempt this location.”

And that’s when all hell broke loose…

Gothamist reported just after 2 pm that there was a “sit-in” going on at the previously mentioned 42nd & Madison location, and the Manager had sealed off the entrance to the location.  Gawker has reports from the same KFC as well. Riese, the company who owns all the KFC’s in Midtown and has a history of botching these free food campaigns at their franchises, did not return my phone call (although in fairness I made it before news of the “sit in” broke.  I’m guessing my call wasn’t the only one they received today…)

There was one positive report via Lunch’er “Cynthia” just before 2 pm: “I printed the coupon yesterday and went to the herald sq location. I waited 5 min, and received my free meal. No problems there. The chicken was pretty good although I do prefer their original recipe and it came with a biscuit and 2 sides.”

Anybody else try to redeem a coupon today? Let us know how it went in the comments below…

  • I was at the 50th/7th ave location at 12:00 – maybe 10 people in front of me – the wait was about 5-10 minutes, but when i was leaving, the line was out the door. food was hot and tasty…just as greasy as the fried version…felt sick 10 minutes after eating…just like the the fried version.

  • all this for some free chicken?…i rather pay and enjoy my meal. its KFC for cyring out.

  • Obama and the vice with the Secret service,i bet.

  • Wow, that sucks. I’m losing any respect left for KFC for their inability to honor coupons. They should know waves and waves of people are going to storm them for free food. Thank goodness I don’t frequent them.

If I’m paying my won money, I rather eat Popeye’s anyway for fried chicken and Pio Pio or Peking in Woodside for Peruvian roast chicken.

  • my own^

  • Barcelona beat Chelsea…..heheh.

  • sorry! I meant to say I went yesterday around 6pm, not today.

  • KFC is my dope noise. The Colonel is a personal hero of mine. Anyone that talks poorly about KFC is going to get their head ripped off by me.

  • KFC is shit…its all shit….the gravy bowls?….just how fat do you want to be…it all shit….have you ever been a KFC in Newark….black people are starving my arse.

  • i tried at 42nd and mad was told to come back 9.30 next day lol oh well frees free

  • How are we supposed to feed our families?

  • The coupon is good until May 19. Why bother fighting the crowds today? I predict that there will be no problems with coupon redemption next week. Incidentally, I still have free red mango coming to me.

  • I called it (I am sure I am not the only one). NYC doesn’t handle these things well. Go early and get out.

  • who get’s KFC at 9:30 in the morning?
are their counters open that early? I’ll let this ride out
the coupon is good till 5/19. I printed out 4 coups.
free is free and I got nothing better to do.

  • redeemed my coupon (actually it printed two, so free dinner for the wife and I) I dont live in NYC, but on on Long Island. At 6:00Pm the line was out the door and everyone had coupons. Wait was about 15 minutes before ordering and about another 15 before getting the meal. Was it worth the wait to say about $9? probably. The drum stick and thigh I got were of the miniature variety and maybe I never noticed it since the original KFC seems larger by way of all the breading. It was good, but I think if I was in a KFC and had to wait on that sort of line without a free coupon, I would have left.

I somehow think though that the grilled chicken in a bucket would be sort of nasty. (drippy, slimey, etc) But maybe paid chicken is better then the free versions….

  • This is one of the many distinctions between New Yawkers and the rest of normal Americans.

New Yawkers are bred to take advantage of the generosity of others. As though they are entitled.

Only in New Yawk would they trample women and children in an effort to secure a soggy chicken wing

  • I’m kinda glad I couldn’t get any grilled….. Rendered Beef Fat?
