Obligatory St. Paddy’s Day Corned Beef Post

Corned Beef Sandwich @ the Blarney Stone, Midtown NYCThis might be the only day of the year that I would actually recommend staying in your office for lunch (it’s rough out there on St. Paddy’s Day), but if you must go out to lunch, and you must have some corned beef (I don’t care if technically it’s not Irish, as some have pointed out) here are a few places you can hit up in Midtown.  My usual St. Paddy’s day lunch spot is the Blarney Stone (on 3rd Ave. btw. 43+44th) but you can also get good corned beef sandwiches at the Homefront Deli (on 41st btw. Mad+Park) and Cafe Edison (on 47th btw. B’way+8th).  If you don’t mind sharing, there is always the Carnegie Deli mitosis idea, and Serious Eats New York says the new corned beef sandwich at Bouchon Bakery is good (although at $10.75 it is outside the ML price range.)  What are you doing to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day?

  • Dunhill Cafe (45th btw 6th and 7th) actually has some very good corned beef and cabbage as a special and I am sure will be serving it, along with Reubens today.

  • By the way, anyone know where I can find a great ML reuben? I have no intention of going east of fifth avenue and have to deal with the out-of-town fake-Irish littering the streets.

  • I am avoiding revelers–all of my 3rd ave spots are off-limits today.

That said, I brought myself a corned beef/kraut/russian sandwich for lunching in the safety of the office.

  • I cooked a batch of Beef & Guinness Stew over the weekend, and baked a loaf of soda bread. Both are waiting for me at lunchtime, packed away. I run an event on Tuesday nights, and I ordered cheese ravioli with pesto sauce for the group. It’s green! :-)

  • I should try and rob some revelers and buy myself a 5 course meal of $1 pizza.

  • i’m going to hang out with kim and the truck, and make fun of people, like every other tuesday.

  • @ Bronx Briner Gal. You are the most organized foodie ever! Bravo!

  • @blondie: She was running the truck in Brooklyn last Sunday and it was awesome! This was a one time thing, but she said she is trying to do more Brooklyn dates in the future.

  • I tried the Bouchon Bakery waygu corned beef sandwich this weekend. It was only $9.75 at the take out window. It was a good sandwich, but light on the meat and it tasted more like roast beef then corned beef.

  • Just got back from the market. Bought corned beef brisket, cabbage, potatoes, bread and Guinness. I’m ready to make dinner. Maybe while the beef cooks I’ll head of to O’Conner’s for a pint :-)

  • Oh, and Jameson…..

  • Blarney was hectic today. So hectic that no onion rings were present! And the Corned beef sandwich was an inflated $8.

  • @ Jill LOL. I had to go out of my office around 2 pm. Wall to wall green drunken people. No chance of getting food, so I’m glad I brought my own. Thanks for the kudos!
