At Lunch Now: Szechuan Gourmet is a Madhouse
1:06 pm, and the waiting area at the front of Szechuan Gourmet (39th btw. 5+6th) is a mob scene. The wait for a two top: 15-20 minutes. This is Midtown people?!?! During lunchtime on a Wednesday? I think it might be time to move Szechuan Gourmet from “One of the best Chinese food restaurants in Midtown” to “One of the best Chinese food restaurants period”. Right?

It is one of the best period….take out is relatively fast though and we usually just bring it back to the office. Get there around noon if you want a table without waiting.

The eggplant lunch special is pretty good, and so is the tofu with sliced pork. Basically this place is awesome for $7 bucks, and I just finished eating takeout from there. You shoulda gone in because the take-out wait at 1pm (today) was only 10 min.

Good chinese in midtown? Where again? I’m gonna have to take a 5 min walk tomorrow and see what the fuss is all about! Take that Nathan it’s now a twentyONE!!!!! minute wait for you regulars.

The kung pao chicken here is terrible. But almost everything else is delicious.

Authentic Chinese cuisine also, none of that wanna-be take out bs. Call before you take-out also … sometimes the wait for take out can be 15 minutes or so.

We went today at exactly noon and the place was virtually empty. About 10-15 mins later it really started filling up though…

It’s my favorite in NYC. I come up for lunch from downtown and I work two blocks from Chinatown. So damn good- anyone have a szechuan rival downtown? Grand Szechuan on Canal is pretty good but not really close!

Best SzeChuan place in NYC is Spicy & Tasty in Flushing. The joint in Flushing mall is good for quick Szechuan food fix and I guess Golden Monkey is ok too. Flushing, in general, is where you get the best variety and quality of Chinese food.

Well, I am lucky to work in this area, and I think I understand and love Sichuan food, for historical reasons. IMHO, it is the best SC place in Manhattan by far. Although lunch specials can be uneven (then again, if you are picky), their regular dishes are absolutely superb: easily beats WLY, if you know what I mean. I had lunches, dinners, and VIP meals and I am excited about their chef. If you have a special night, please consult maitre’d. Even if you are a Chinese, you will not be disappointed.
