Wishlist: A Kick-Ass Torta
A few weeks ago I was in the Bay Area and had the greatest torta of all time at this little place called La Casita Chilanga in Redwood City. What I wouldn’t give to have this lunch available in Midtown. I’ve had the torta at Pampano Taqueria, but it doesn’t compare to this.
I had “La Cubana” torta, and wrote about it on Serious Eats. You can read about it here: http://www.seriouseats.com/eating_out/2007/11/serious-sandwiches-la-cubana-torta-from-la-ca.html
And if you have any NYC torta suggestions, please post them below. (Seriously, please.)

Not sure, but I think one problem with NY tortas is that you need proper bolillo. Maybe it’s like Italians that complain about the proper bread that is need on a hero. A torta really needs to start with that little football shaped bread. I’ve also had a hard time finding excellent refried pinto beans.

el paso tacqueria has a pretty good torta, there’s one on the ues and one in harlem i think

i second the el paso tacqueria suggestion, 97th and Park and another on 103rd and Lex, i like the harlem location better, though the ues location is prettier

I agree on the el paso taqueria suggestion. They’ve also got some great vegetarian options (try the mushroom burrito), a pretty good mole sauce and some excellent tamales (try the oaxaca tamale).

Tulcingo Del Valle sells tortas for $5. I’ve never tried one, but the rest of the stuff on the menu is consistantly great.

I like Fast & Fresh Deli off Atlantic Avenue in Cobble Hill.

Nate is right on track – http://menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=28026&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=0
Get the torta Carnitas and take a trip to heaven. Don’t expect it to be a pressed sandwich or anything like that, just one of the best sandwiches in NY, period. I have never been compelled to post, but this topic prompted me. The place is rather far west, but unreal food/prices. Get the chicken nachos – not a huge pile of tostitos but rather homemade chips with the perfect amount of cheese and fresh chicken.

the taco place on 23rd just west of 6th has a pretty good torta.

Yesterday’s NY Times Food Section featured a review of taquerias in Sunset Park Brooklyn — not Midtown I know but for Mexican food in NYC you gotta take what you can get. One place in particular — Rico’s Tacos, was noted for its Tortas.
