Nate is right on track - http://menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=28026&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=0

Get the torta Carnitas and take a trip to heaven. Don't expect it to be a pressed sandwich or anything like that, just one of the best sandwiches in NY, period. I have never been compelled to post, but this topic prompted me. The place is rather far west, but unreal food/prices. Get the chicken nachos - not a huge pile of tostitos but rather homemade chips with the perfect amount of cheese and fresh chicken.

Tulcingo Del Valle sells tortas for $5. I've never tried one, but the rest of the stuff on the menu is consistantly great.

I agree on the el paso taqueria suggestion. They've also got some great vegetarian options (try the mushroom burrito), a pretty good mole sauce and some excellent tamales (try the oaxaca tamale).

Not sure, but I think one problem with NY tortas is that you need proper bolillo. Maybe it's like Italians that complain about the proper bread that is need on a hero. A torta really needs to start with that little football shaped bread. I've also had a hard time finding excellent refried pinto beans.
