PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Mark”

I’m in England all week long, so every day I’m turning over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er.  Today, it’s Mark- a Digital Media salesperson who digs the raw fish, but doesn’t eat Lamb.  Looking at his photo, I never would have guessed…

Name: Mark

Age:
49

Occupation:
Digital Media Sales

Where in Midtown do you Work?:
37th and 7th

Favorite Kind of Food:
Sushi/Sashimi

Least Favorite Kind of Food:
Lamb, don’t do it, no sir.

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown:
Homefront Deli – 41st btw. Park+5th.  The Grilled Pastrami & Swiss is to die for! (and WOULD probably kill you if you ate it too often!)  Burgers are great, and their cold sandwich packs some real heft without costing $10. Or try the “Roman” sandwich, which is basically an Italian Hero. Get it with the hot cherry peppers. You can get out with that sammy and a drink for like $6 or so. I guarantee you’ll be full. Also awesome is Turkey, swiss, bacon, L&T with Russian dressing, either on a hero or on an “everthing” bagel. The Greek salad with chicken is popular too – lots of chicken.  Damn, now I’m really hungry! It gets crowded, it’s a little hole in the wall. There are two lines, one for hot & one for cold, so make sure you’re on the right one.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Delmonico’s and/or Old Bridge Deli – 2 practically identical “we serve everything” delis across the street from each other on 41st & Lex. The only saving grace about Delmonico’s is that they make a brown rice Spicy Tuna roll and they don’t use mayo in it, just tuna & Sriracha sauce. I know, “healthy” sorry! :)

Place you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: 99 cent pizza - whats not to like? Especially on days when the wallet is feeling a bit “light”

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Soho / Village – Chinatown, little Italy, Nobu (as a guest!)

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Any good recommendations for Korean take out in K-Town area?

My favorite Korean Take Out place, after the jump…

Woorjip on 32nd btw. B’way and 5th.  It’s like a Korean Cafe Zaiya.  All sorts of pre packaged Korean goodies, plus a buffet by the lb.  So much fun.  Do you have your own favorite Korean take out place?  Post it as a comment below…

Homefront Deli is on 41st St. between Park and 5th? Does that mean it’s on Madison? Your vague directions intrigue me. I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Where is it exactly and do they give you a good amount of pastrami on their grilled sandwhiche? Is it quality pastrami or that nasty shite they have at Subway? Eat fresh!

Tough crowd, EXCUSUUUUSE me! It’s between Madison & Park
    41 E 41st St to be exact, here’s their phone number (212) 682-0838

Yes it’s the crappy Pastrami and a poor amount also, that’s why it’s so great. All the fun of Subway without the ambiance.

    Happy now?

Worijip just remodeled, and the new setup threw me for a little loop.
Plus, the food I had off the hot buffet last night was sub-par.

    Did they change hands?

oh, and the lunch specials at Kunjip across the street is a great bargain for a sitdown Korean meal, and not so bad for takeout as well…lots of little containers of kimchi-goodness.

Just don’t dig on it. Even if I get some by accident (Churrascaria Plataforma) I don’t like it, sorry.

    Dear Zap/Mark:

I guess your cover is blown.

Subway did more than $9 billion in sales last year, including what they call pastrami. Obviously many people like it (although I think these people are crazy).

Similarly, Homefront Deli might serve a “pastrami” sandwhich that is nothing more than rat on rye, but you may love it just the same. Different peoples have different tastes. Hence my question.

LAMB! I’m always shocked when people don’t like it. I guess it does have a distinct flavor – some lamb (ie: the lamb in bifteki) I don’t like – tastes dirty. But a nice medium-rare lamb chop seasoned with rosemary, oh my god – to die for. Perhaps because my mom rarely fed us anything but lamb when I was little is why I enjoy it so much. Slaughter your own meat and it’s bound to end up on the table for dinner more than once a week.

As for those sandwiches – well you know me :) This wich hunter is hitting up homefront deli for lunch! Pastrami and swiss… mmmm

Good call on Homefront. Tried the Roman sandwich today. Very solid and inexpensive for the size ($5!). Will have to go back for the Pastrami.

Just had the Roman at Homefront. I’m so stuffed. Not great but filling, inexpensive, and quick. Thanks Mark!

Homefront is awesome. Been there 3 times now, great call. Sliced Steak sandwich w/ cheese on a hero with lettuce, tomato, onion…very, very good. The Here and cheese will run you an extra buck, but at around $7 its one of the better ones in the area.

By comparison Berger’s Deli (which has excellent food on 39th and 5th) gives you a sandwich that’s maybe 2/3 of the size of this one for a couple bucks more.

Also they have a 4 piece fried chicken with fries for 5.75- not the best fried chicken in the world, but very good value.
