BREAKING NEWS: Riese Snubs Midtown on Haagen Dazs Free Flavor Day

This just in courtesy of Eater:

Today is New Flavor Day at Haagen-Dazs. They’re debuting two new varieties, Cinnamon Dulce de Leche and Sticky Toffee Pudding, in between 4 and 8 PM tonight.  Both flavors will be offered gratis.

But guess what?  3 of the 4 Midtown Locations are owned by Riese Restaurants, and they are not participating in Free Flavor Day!  These are the Riese owned locations where you will NOT be getting any Free Ice Cream:

  • 761 7th Ave. (at 50th St.)
  • 110 Penn Plaza (Penn Station)
  • 1286 Broadway (at 33rd St.)

Apparently there is another Haagen Dazs located in Penn Station, NOT owned by Riese, but we couldn’t get info regarding their participation.  If you know of a Haagen Dazs in Midtown participating in Free Flavor Day, comment below or email me zach@midtownlunch.com

  • Anyone up for a boycott?

And give up TGI Fridays!  I don’t know if i can do it… ;-)  -zach

  • Ok, I’ll jump on board the boycott…. I promise not to go to the Riese locations for free cones. Take that!

  • I tried two other Haagen Dazs today. The one in Union Square is no longer (but it’s not reflected on Haagen Dazs’ site), and the one on Bleecker and Broadway said they ran out. All their tubs looked pretty full to me. I’m writing a complaint letter.

  • Easily done. I hate Riese–they are the thieves who up the $8 burger at TGI Fridays to $16.

  • http://www.rieserestaurants.com/home.asp Here is a list of their restaurants.

  • Woohoo, I got a coupon after complaining. Here’s the apology letter they sent:

Thank you for your email regarding your recent visit to the Häagen-Dazs(r) shop in New York. We are very concerned when an incident such as this arises and appreciate your bringing this matter to our attention.

Häagen-Dazs(r) shops are independently owned and operated and the shop owner is responsible for resolving your situation. However, we also believe that you should have a pleasant experience in any shop bearing our name, and we have forwarded your comments to the corporate managers for this area. We regret that you were unable to enjoy your time at the Häagen-Dazs(r) shop and urge you to contact the manager or owner directly to complete the issue to your satisfaction.

Please watch your mail for a gift certificate to arrive for Häagen-Dazs(r) along with our sincere apologies. We appreciate your calling this matter to our attention and hope that your next Häagen-Dazs(r) experience will bring you nothing but pleasure.

  • No surprise. Riese restaurants are the worst in NYC hands down. The routinely fail to participate in any TGI Friday’s locations, they have the filthiest stores with the rudest staff of any chains in NYC.

Frankly, you can always spot a chain Riese spot a mile away. Be it Dunkin Donuts, KFC, Roy Rogers, Pizza Hut, TGI Friday’s, etc. If it’s Riese it’s just disgusting to look at, overpriced, and nasty. If it’s not Riese owned, it will have a cleaner, newer exterior, a cleaner interior, and people working that at least marginally care about serving you.

I really wish all the chains would revoke their franchises so that Manhattanites could get real food from these chains.

    It’s that simple.

  • What was the final word on free haagen daaz in penn station? They are giving out vanilla honey bee today.

  • but the 7th ave location is listed as participating on H-D’s web site!! :(

  • I got my free Haagen Dazs ice cream at the Bway and 33rd St. shop. I arrived at 4:10pm with a print-out from the Haagen Dazs website displaying the offer. I’ve found that most shops in Penn Station will usually not honor free promotions. 2 Carvel shops there said they knew nothing about the free offer last week, and I heard that nobody scored with that one anywhere in NYC.
I think it’s best to arrive early in the giveaway time, with an ad or print-out in hand. If there’s a line, that’s a good sign.

  • So I went to http://www.rieserestaurants.com…. you can click on any of their franchises to see all of the riese-owned locations. Of all 15 brands, the only one with no link showing Riese-owned locations is Haagen Dazs. Anyone else find this suspicious?
