Midtown Lunch

Here at Midtown Lunch, we’re pretty into Korean fried chicken whether it’s here in Midtown or in Downtown or even in Los Angeles (where Zach seemed to really like a branch of Kyochon that had been open longer than a few hours.) These places are delicate operations of fried goodness. We already know that many of these Korean fried chicken places sometimes have issues of serving food in a timely manner. So it’s probably not a great idea to judge a place when they’re not firing on all cylinders. It’s not fair to the place, and most of all, it’s not as useful for the readers of Midtown Lunch. I’m sure hardcore Improv Everywhere fans have seen this already (because this “mission” happened almost five months ago) but I just saw it yesterday for the first time and felt the need to post it… not just because it takes place in the Trump Tower atrium (on 56th and 5th) but also because I too kind of love lunch.

A midweek St. Patrick’s Day can be a dubious proposition. Think about it, you can go balls out and join the parade and the eventual debauchery that ensues, and let’s not even mention the green beer society that ends up being the green puke society. You can opt to stay a little off the beaten path but most likely you’ll still heed the siren’s call of Paddy’s day specials and free corned beef. Come the next work day it’s all bloodshot eyes, trembling hands and throbbing temples. Your only hope is that your coworkers will be too busy nursing their own hangovers to notice yours.

Fork in the Road released their 10 Best Sandwiches in New York list, and unsurprisingly none of them are in Midtown.  But we did score two in the “runners up” list: ‘wichcraft’s white anchovy, soft-cooked egg, salsa verde, and frisee (whatever, it’s a chain), and Virgil’s Owensboro lamb sandwich (on 44th btw. B’way+6th). At $14 the lamb sandwich is way out of the ML price range, but call us intrigued. Anybody had this thing yet? And would you chose it over the Sophie’s Cuban fried pork and plantains sandwich? And what about all of Certe’s Sandwiches (on 55th btw. 5+6th)? Or Ma Peche’s pork banh mi? What Midtown sandwich do you think should have been on the list? Or were they right in snubbing us…

And here we are, the fourth Friday in Lent. You can do it Catholics, two more to go! We’ve covered some of the fried fish options, but what if you gave up fried things (Brownie!) or have been sick enough that someone (Zach!) told you that if you’ve called in sick to work on Wednesday, you shouldn’t go have burgers off a truck as a sick-day lunch. Well, then it would be Asian vegetable soup time.

Now that Downtown has its very own section of the site, what are we going to post on Fridays at 10am? Answer… how about a new column devoted to those lunches just south of the ML boundaries. Please give a warm welcome to Jason Lam from the blog Me So Hungry. Every Friday at 10am he’ll post about lunches in Murray Hill south, Grammercy, Flatiron, and everything in between… or as we’ll call it from now on: Flatiron Lunch.

Around the corner on 29th from the Broadway sweatshirt and perfume wholesalers, lies some great spicy South Asian (Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi) food at two neighboring restaurants with similar food and prices. One is upstairs with a nicer dining room (although still worn down), while the downstairs one is even shabbier with bright florescent lighting. Of course nicer doesn’t always mean better… and in this case the latter is always more packed and the definitive people’s choice. This is Chandni.
