Aroy Dee Thai Gets Early Downtown Luncher Endorsement

Earlier this week, temporary signage was strung up over the old It’s A Pizza’s sign on John St. announcing the arrival of Aroy Dee Thai Kitchen. It ended up opening on Tuesday, and lunch’er Eric wrote in to give his impressions of what he ate. Express lunch thoughts, straight ahead!

Caruso’s Catches Fire, Causes Cafe Tomato To Close

Somehow it escaped my notice among all of the construction at Fulton St. & Broadway, but pizza shop Caruso’s Pizza apparently caught fire. It was completely boarded up on Thursday, and Cafe Tomato next door (home to a decent Korean food counter) also had to close up due to damage, according to large signs taped to the windows.

I’ve never eaten at Caruso’s, somewhat discouraged by the fake chef statue sitting out front, but if you’re in need of a slice walk a couple of blocks to Rosella’s, Friendly Pizza or Majestic Pizza & Calzone.

First Look: Siring Asian Grill Brings New Lunch Option To Gross Stretch Of Broadway

Among the fast food establishment and tourist shops on the stretch of Broadway between Canal and Chambers streets, shiny new Siring Asian Grill (at Worth) stands out. It’s essentially a Chipotle of Asian food, allowing you to build a wrap or bowl of rice noodles, rice or salad as a base. We’ve seen this type of “build you own lunch” restaurant before but this one’s probably welcome in an area that’s fairly grim with lunch options that aren’t McDonald’s or dollar pizza slices.

Asian Wok’s $7 Lunch Special’s Not Half Bad

I’ve been missing the somewhat authentic Chinese food found at Goodies and not too excited to try out its replacement, Asian Wok, located in the same spot in the little mall at Fulton St. & Gold. A glance at the menu showed one of the cheaper lunch combos I’ve seen at $6.95 for an entree and rice, along with your choice of soup or egg roll. And the quality turned out to be better than what I’ve gotten at other Chinese places downtown.

Signage Goes Up At Clarke’s Standard

Signage went up on the Goodburger replacement, Clarke’s Standard, at the corner of Maiden Lane and Pearl St. recently. There’s no sign of when this new offshoot of P.J. Clarke’s will open, but hopefully it will by the time warmer weather comes around since there’s a nice space for outdoor seating out front.

Thai Restaurant To Replace It’s A Pizza

For all of you who were as sad as I was when the roller coaster ride of It’s A Pizza on John St. (btw. Broadway & Nassau) ended with a closure, you may be interested to know it’s being replaced. The windows had been papered up for a while and last night a banner was up announcing Aroy Dee Thai Kitchen’s arrival. It looks like some work is still being done to the inside, but hopefully we’ll get our hands on some of their food soon.

Sun Cafe Redeems Itself With A Terrific Sushi Roll Lunch Special

It’s hard finding sushi lunch specials downtown that are the right balance of quality and price. Often you pay $8 to $10 and get two skimpy rolls with an iceberg lettuce salad or cup of miso soup, and you’re hungry again in an hour. Or you just have to break the $10 barrier so you’re not in search of a snack right after lunch. I’m happy to say that if you work within walking or delivery distance of Sun Cafe on Reade St. (btw. Broadway & Church), I think you’re going to be happy with the size and price of the sushi rolls you get.
