Frites N Meats Back On The Streets Monday With Free Food

After an accident on the W. Side Highway basically blew up the Frites N Meats truck back in April they’ve been on hiatus. They announced that they’ll return to the streets Monday, and to celebrate will be parking in several locations giving out “100+” free frites. The exact spots haven’t been determined (check out the Twitter Tracker for details) but according to their blog will include the Financial District and Soho.

Cosmopolitan Cafe: Where Egg Creams And Crepes Go Hand In Hand

The lowest part of Manhattan doesn’t have many lunch spots that I would term “whimsical” but I think I’ve found the closest thing at Cosmopolitan Cafe’s soda fountain on W. Broadway (at Chambers). It’s a tiny space, focused on the soda and ice cream fountain in the back but they also serve amenu entirely under $10 consisting of crepes and a few daily specials like a burger and sandwiches. Look for the smiling ice cream cones on the scaffolding next to the entrance – and don’t get it confused with the pricier cafe around the corner on Chambers. Empire Asian Clumps Three Cuisines Together In One Convenient Location

It’s always a little sketchy when a place tries to cook three different cuisines in one place, but that’s what Empire Asian on Murray St. (btw. Broadway & Church) is doing. It’s a little hidden behind scaffolding, sandwiched between the Copper Barrel bar and a Muscle Maker Grill. A signboard out front alerts you that they have Chinese, Japanese AND Thai food, and lunch specials starting at $6.95, although it looked like some of the sushi was more in the $10 area. Otherwise they have your standard katsu, pad thai, maki roll trifecta. They should really think about cross-pollination, like general tso’s sushi.

Did Centre Melts Make Me A Grilled Cheese Convert?

Here’s a confession: I’m not a huge fan of grilled cheese. That was why I was kind of perplexed when I heard there was more than one truck devoted to this sandwich hitting the streets of New York City, and after eating at the first one to launch, I was even more confused. Why would people pay nearly $10 for two slices of bread with some cheese in it? Couldn’t I make this at home with little effort? Centre Melts, one of the new kiosks around 1 Centre St., opened a while back and I was curious if it was going to be any better than the mobile competition. To the analysis! Read more »
