Warm Up With Capogiro Hot Chocolate

Its been a cold, icky week. I needed something childlike to pick me up. Can you blame me? While you may not normally associate warming up at Capogiro, my favorite gelato place ever, their hot beverages should not be looked over.

Robot Sushi and Froyo at Yoshi

Today Luncher John finds out if robots can make sushi.

Suburban Station isn’t exactly the foremost food destination in Center City. It does, however, now offer something available nowhere else in Philly: Yoshi – a combination frozen yogurt and fast food sushi (YOgurt + suSHI) establishment. Sure, there are a ton of frozen yogurt shops in town, but where else can you get a sushi lunch to accompany dessert?

Lil’ Pop Shop Cart Helps Cool Us Down

Lil Pop Shop opened its West Philly Pop Shop in May. More recently though, its lil cart has been popping up around town, bringing their icy treats to Center City. Which is lucky for us considering Food and Wine just named them as one of the best popsicle in the country. Pops are $3 and flavors vary.

Waffles Are Good For Breakfast, Lunch, or Dessert at Bonté

John is having his breakfast AND his lunch today at Bonte.

When my brother had a work assignment for a few months in Belgium, I did not take the opportunity to go visit him. After my brother returned and began extolling the virtues of waffles from the Belgian city of Liège, I began to regret passing up the chance to experience this Belgian delicacy firsthand.

Fortunately, Bonté Wafflerie and Café offers the Liège-style waffle in town with two locations in Center City (130 South 17th Street and 922 Walnut Street). Bonté is open from breakfast until 6 p.m., serving as a coffeehouse in the morning and sandwich/salad/soup the rest of the day. I finally sampled the waffle while grabbing lunch, and I’m not sure why I waited so long to try it.

The Olive Oil Gelato Mission

A while back at dinner in Mario Batali’s Otto in NYC I was most captivated by the dessert- olive oil gelato studded with sea salt. It was transcendental. The sweetness was so subtle and it tasted like the highest quality olive oil. So, I was on a mission to find it in Philly. After a series of tweets, Starr Restaurant let me know that Stella offered olive oil gelato on its rotating homemade gelato menu.

Skipping Straight to Desserts at Swiss Haus

This week, Profiled Luncher John satiates his sweet-tooth.

Whenever there are events, such as birthdays, wedding showers or retirement parties, at work, we always have cake. And the cakes that people bring in most often come from Swiss Haus, a bakery located on 19th Street between Market and Chestnut. While I’ve been enjoying Swiss Haus cakes for years, I finally checked out the shop to see if it could serve as a viable lunch option.

Originally known as the Swiss Pastry Shop, the bakery has been serving Philadelphians with its cake and pastry recipes for over 80 years. In 2007, after the Swiss Pastry Shop went out of business, new owners hired the chef and re-opened the bakery as Swiss Haus.
