More Chicken? A Barbacoa Preview

Yes, I am reporting on chicken for the 2nd day in a row. But for good reason. Last night, while on a food adventure, I stumbled into the Grand Opening celebration for Barbacoa, Upper Darby’s new Peruvian Style Rotisserie Chicken Place.

I really had no idea what was going on, but I walked in and was handed a plate of chicken to try out.

Rotisseur Wins at Banh Mi

When Rotisseur opened for lunch this summer, I wondered if it would fall under the ML under $10 budget. The claims of “cage-free, hormone-free, antibiotic-free” chicken and sides made me skeptical it might not. Then I found out that the entire menu, unless I was craving a whole chicken for lunch, would be ML affordable.

On my trip there, I admired the way the small space was decorated with just the right ratio of modern to homeyness. The counter of magazines and newspapers to read while you wait was a nice touch, though I preferred people watching at the big window facing 21st Street.

Fruity Chicken at Ho Sai Gai

Today, Luncher Steph is reporting on some far-out options from Ho Sai Gai.

At the center of Philly Chinatown, hovering over the southwest corner of 10th and Race, looms the bright red signage for Ho Sai Gai. I’ve walked past Ho Sai Gai a hundred times, merely taking it for another “tourist-friendly” Chinese eatery. However, while roaming Race Street in search of my next lunch, a picture hanging in the restaurant window caught my eye. What I had construed as brilliantly green shumai, Ho Sai Gai captioned as “Avocado Puff.” Suffice it to say, I was intrigued and decided to find out what was in store for my taste buds.

Indian Restaurant is Way More Generic Sounding Than Tasting

A while back, Meal Ticket posted about the opening of a new Indian restaurant on South Street, called Indian Restaurant, and I was really hoping the name was just temporary. But at the Grand Opening in March we found out it wasn’t. What’s in a name anyway? And so I visited to try some of their lunch specials.

Snacks from All Around Asia at Cube Cafe

Chinatown has a ton of bakeries selling similar delicious baked good and drinks, plus a few with specialties like Yummy Yummy with their waffles and New Harmony with their “pop” smoothies. Cube Cafe has both, along with a menu of food that is… Pan-Asian inspired? Really though, the photo menu on the counter covers food from Vietnam, Malaysia, Korea, and China. Plus breakfast and dessert.

Penang’s Roti and Hainanese Chicken

Today, we are getting a report on Malaysian lunching from profiled luncher Stephanie.

Penang was the first restaurant I dined at when I moved to in Philadelphia back in 2006. My mom and I somehow found ourselves at Market East Station on a bad recommendation. It was raining, we were hungry, and Penang boasted the most attractive facade in Chinatown. Over the years, Penang has become my default place for hearty Malaysian soup noodles and flavor-inspired meals when I’m in the mood for non-Chinese food in Chinatown. And conveniently enough for me, Penang also offers one of my favorite lunches in town for under $10.

Oh yes, I did… IHOP’s Chicken and Waffles

I have always overlooked IHOP for several reasons: my late night go to meal is always 13th St Pizza rather than hashbrowns, I am more of a dinner and lunch person rather than breakfast, and I can’t bring myself to frequent chain restaurants when great local spots are plentiful. But I was singing a different tune when I walked by and saw the sign advertising a Chicken and Waffles as a limited time offering.  I had to do it.
