Tacos at Tres Jalapenos

Tres Jalapenos is a “safe” Mexican restaurant. It has bright, festive decorations and checkered table cloths. As the safeness and slightly cheesiness should have hinted at, the food was lacking in authenticity. It was not an unpleasant meal, just nothing was memorable. However, if you don’t have lunch plans tomorrow, there is a special you should know about.

Our waiter was exceptionally sweet. Chips and salsa came out quickly and he was not stingy with the refills. As the photo shows, we took advantage of the BYO policy.

The tortilla soup ($5) had more of the crispy tortilla strips on top with a mellow broth. I was hoping for a little more flavor and substance from the small bowl.

I enjoyed the tangy green sauce over my chicken enchiladas ($9.25), though the chicken was a bit dry. The beans and rice on the side guarantee that you will be stuffed if you can finish the plate.

I tried several of the tacos, al pastor being the best, but generally they are just decent/acceptable/fine. I would recommend tacos from Las Cazuelas, Don Memo’s, or Jose’s Tacos.  Unless… unless, it is a Tuesday and you are looking for quantity over quality. Then you should most definitely take advantage of the Unlimited Taco Tuesday deal, where you can eat as many tacos as you want for $14.

How many can you eat?

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • Nice staff that doesn’t cheap out on the free chips
  • Entrees are very large

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Not the best Mexican food in town
  • Tacos are better quality elsewhere

  • Such a shame, because they used to be called Los Jalapeno’s on 4th and Moore (literally around the corner from my old place) and they were freaking fantastic and takeout only. I was also underwhelmed by the new jawn.

  • Yeah I agree their tacos are just OK. Prefer their burritos especially ordered “wet” buried under sauce (green or red?) and cheese.
