My New Favorite Samosas in Philly Come From A Grocery Store

While walking in University City I passed by the International Foods and Spices Grocery Store and hoped I could stock up on some fun grocery items.  The store mainly specializes in Indian and Pakistani food products (canned, frozen, dried, etc). I ended up leaving with 4 bags of groceries and lunch.

After Piles of Meat, A Vegan Break is in Order Courtesy of The Basic 4 Vegetarian Snack Bar

I ate an insane amount of meat on Monday. It is important to have balance in life, so  the Basic Vegetarian Snack Bar in Reading Terminal seemed like the appropriate place to detox (at least for one meal). It is a pretty popular stand in RT, and gets pretty busy during lunch time but the staff is efficient.

Since I generally like the concept of burgers or sandwiches topped with random things, I zoomed in on the “burger” topped with “chicken” salad.

Get Piles of Nicaraguan and Mexican Meat at El Gallo Pinto

When Drew Lazor reported that  a South Philly grocery store was serving Nicaraguan food I was immediately excited, having spent some time there 2 years ago. How I forgot that it existed for so many months is very upsetting, shame on me.  But somehow it popped in to my head and I found myself heading to the back of El Gallo Pinto to place my order.

After facing blank stares when trying to order vigaron, a typical Nicaraguan dish, I found out that the original Nicaraguan owner sold the business a few month ago to people who are from Mexico. So now the menu has been narrowed, with less popular Nicaraguan dishes being ousted and Mexican food added. This barely posed a problem and I was able to order a ridiculous amount of Mexican and Nicaraguan food.

Way Beyond Kebobs at Sansom Kebob House

Sansom Kebob House has been on my list of places to dine for a while now. The sun was unforgiving and I needed somewhere to sit down and escape. Too hot for outdoor seating, there was no reason not to head down to Sansom Street’s subterranean Afghani restaurant. Maybe Afghani food is not the first thing that comes to mind to refresh you on a hot day, but my yogurt topped appetizer was just the right start.
