After Piles of Meat, A Vegan Break is in Order Courtesy of The Basic 4 Vegetarian Snack Bar

I ate an insane amount of meat on Monday. It is important to have balance in life, so  the Basic Vegetarian Snack Bar in Reading Terminal seemed like the appropriate place to detox (at least for one meal). It is a pretty popular stand in RT, and gets pretty busy during lunch time but the staff is efficient.

Since I generally like the concept of burgers or sandwiches topped with random things, I zoomed in on the “burger” topped with “chicken” salad.

When I asked if I wanted vegan cheese added, I said yes, but it didn’t add much, so save your 75cents. Besides the bun that was a little unstable, I enjoyed the rest of this. The burger was more grain based than veggie based so it had a pleasant fibery rather than the greens or carroty taste from other local veggie burgers. Its good that vegetarians have different burger style options in Philly. The burger was on the thin side, so the addition of the chicken salad was definitely beneficial. The chicken salad seems to be some sort of soy protein in a fake mayo that actually tasted pretty mayo-like. That might sound unappealing, but I swear I liked it. I happen to like the squishy texture of soy protein and the way it can absorb flavors. Bonus: Unlike chicken salad, you don’t have to worry about biting or choking on a tiny bone.
