Trying Senegalese Food For the First Time at Kilimandjaro

Out in West Philly, next to an erotic dvd purveyor is Kilimandjaro, a restaurant specializing in Senegalese food. Africa is probably the continent whose food I am least familiar with, and despite my many attempts, Ethiopian food has never rubbed me the right way, but I was hopeful that the French influence found in Senegalese cooking  might appeal to me.

Empanada Day: It's Emapanada Day at Far From Home Cafe in Love Park, from 11-3 with over a dozen different empanada varieties! How about the Birthday Cake with Tasty Kake butterscotch krimpets or the better yet, the Argentina-ish with seasoned beef with paprika, raisins, onions, eggs, green olives and cream cheese. Update: There might be a wait

Little Baby’s Ice Cream Knows How to Combine Sriracha and Earl Grey

The list of flavor combos was the first thing that made me dying to test out Little Baby’s Ice Cream (Balsamic Banana, Grilled Peach and Mint, EARL GREY SRIRACHA, Vegan Coconut Tea). The second was their means of ice cream dispensing- a tricycle. And then there is the name and the logo, too freakin cute. So far, Little Baby’s  serves their handmade ice cream at various city wide events and delivers small shipments to  Green Aisle grocer, so their elusiveness further adds to the appeal. PROFILE: Philly Luncher “Kishwer”

As is customary at Philly Lunch, every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Philadelphia. This week, it’s Kishwer aka Phillygrrl, to whom I owe a lunch date!

Name: Kishwer

Age: 25

Occupation: Copy Writer/Legal Intern

Where in Philly do you Work?: South Broad Street

Favorite Kind of Food: Anything with bacon in it. And of course, until I learn my mother’s recipes, I’m always in the search of the perfect Pakistani meal, i.e. chicken and rice.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Doesn’t exist

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Philly: For comfort food, the $11 fried chicken lunch special every Thursday at Meme on 22nd and Spruce can’t be beat. Mi Lah Vegetarian on 218 South 16th Street prepares a tofu banh mi covered in spicy veganaise that easily rivals anything you find on Washington Avenue. Philadelphia Chutney Company on 16th and Samson makes great South Indian food. Be sure to check Twitter and Facebook for their daily special deals. Try any of their dosa combinations and don’t forget to order a mango lassi to go. Mumbai Bistro has fresh North Indian eats that go easy on the wallet. I highly recommend garlic naan and Maaza guava juice with any meal you order. And last, but not least, Jamaican Jerk Hut on 14th and
South makes a jerk chicken leg quarter platter that will make you weep with pleasure.

Eat Your Fat-Ex Wife for Lunch at Coastal Cave

Coastal Cave is a quirky, mildly Asian influenced,  seafood-centric stand in Reading Terminal. The menu is scattered and strange, and I am totally into that. A lunch here could be decently healthy or really really bad for you, the choice is yours (but I choose both). Coastal Cave has a list of sandwiches whose names are as amusing as their contents are tempting.
