Clusi Batusi is Surprisingly Decent, But Can It Handle 800 Degree-Like Lines?

DSC09877

The strip of West L.A. on Sawtelle between Olympic and Santa Monica has long been known as a hub for good Japanese food; the Osaka to Downtown’s Tokyo.  The great Asian hope, in a Westside sea of duds.  And its resurrection as a popular lunchtime destination over the past year or two has been well documented.  But most recently it’s been interesting to see how many non Japanese success stories have popped up on this half mile stretch.  Food options that might not be Japanese, but still appeal to the ever growing Sawtelle crowd.  Whether it’s Korean soondubu from the 7 month old Seoul House of Tofu, the Umami-like burgers at Plan Check, or Vietnamese food at the super packed NongLA, Sawtelle is no longer just ramen, curry and sushi.

But the biggest gamble has got to be the pizza.  Earlier this year Slice Truck brought their New York style pies to a brick and mortar up by Sawtelle Kitchen, and even more recently Clusi Batusi opened their doors, another in a new school batch of pizzerias looking to turn quick cooking Neapolitan’ish pizza into fast food.

Bawarchi Adds Meat to Their Menu And It Makes Me Surprisingly Sad

DSC09946

It looks like Zam Zam Market isn’t the only South Asian restaurant in Culver City with some big news these days. Thanks to this comment we were tipped off to the fact that Bawarchi, the great Vegetarian steam table famously run by a serious “Soup Nazi” Chef of sorts, is now offering meat options on their previously veggie only menu. We have long contended that Culver City has the best Indian food in Los Angeles, and Bawarchi is far and away the best of the point to what you want Vegetarian places that seem to be ubiquitous on Venice and Washington Boulevards these days. The only thing that could make it better? Meat. Or so I thought.

Seoul Sausage Has Been Quietly Previewing Their Menu Since Tuesday (And Today’s the Last Day)

DSC09992

After months and months of waiting Seoul Sausage on Sawtelle in West L.A. is finally opening on Saturday, but for those of you who can’t wait any longer they’ve been quietly training their staff and testing out menu items for the past two days.  L.A. has had a few chances to sample bites from the winners of the Great Food Truck Race (most notably at the L.A. Street Food Fest), but this week has been the first time I can remember that fans in L.A. can finally order a whole sausage sandwich- plus try out some of their non sausage items (short rib poutine, anybody!?)

A look at the goods (plus some of Seoul Sausage’s future plans) is after the jump…

Khan Shabu Shabu Has an Amazing $10 Lunch Menu

DSC09870

I’m sorry shabu shabu. I don’t how I went so long without singing your praises. I have no excuse. You are amazing and delicious and you deserve to be cheered with as much fervor as Korean BBQ or Tsukemen or any of the other great lunches that involve piles of cooked meat or dipping stuff into other stuff. Admittedly, it took me a long time to come to this realization but I’m ready to make it up to you. How does me eating at a shabu shabu place every single day for the next two weeks sound to you? Because I’m willing to sacrifice myself just to prove to you how sorry I am. And how much I love you.

Just one request. Can I make it up to you exclusively at Khan Shabu Shabu? Because I can’t imagine there’s a better lunchtime shabu shabu deal in all of Los Angeles.

Your First Look at Chego’s Newly Revamped Menu

DSC09933
Did you know you can now eat in at Chego during lunchtime?

Its there anything more exciting than when your favorite neighborhood lunch spot, the one that you’ve eaten at a million times, changes up their menu?  Most places will do it gradually or with the seasons, subtly swapping out a few dishes here and there.  Of course there is nothing subtle about Roy Choi’s food, so nobody should be surprised that the new menu at Chego (which just launched yesterday) amounts to a bit of an atom bomb explosion.  Sure, we were warned weeks ago on the Kogi blog that it was coming.  But now that it’s here, it’s hard not to be excited and overwhelmed by all the changes…
