Chinatown’s Wah Mei Fast Food Will Deliver Pork Chops to Midtown

Mai Wah Pork Chop Fast Food

I’m a huge fan of the newish NYC Cravings truck, which serves Taiwanese style pork chops and fried chicken over rice and pork sauce with pickled cabbage two days a week in Midtown.  But not everybody agrees with me.  There are those who claim it’s not nearly as good as the places in Chinatown, to which I’ve always said: “well, we’re not in Chinatown!”  And even though most of us don’t have the time to trek down to Chinatown for Taiwanese pork chops,  it looks like Chinatown will actually bring pork chops to us!  Got this email from Lunch’er Teresa yesterday:

Just an FYI, my co-workers and I just had lunch delivered from Wah Mei Pork Chop Fast Food (on Hester btw. Baxter & Mulberry.) It was a success.  You just need to order at least 4 items, and do it by 11am, and apparently they will deliver ANYWHERE in Manhattan.  (My office is on 52nd and 7th).

Their “order”, with prices, is after the jump…

Downtown Lunch: Hand Pulled Noodles at Sheng Wang

Midtown workers shouldn’t have all the fun, so to even the score, I’ve brought on Daniel Krieger as an official Downtown Lunch Correspondent to write up some of the tasty stuff you can get in the lower half of Manhattan. He’s a great photographer (ensuring good food porn), but more importantly he is a lover of cheap, unique and delicious eats (or as I like to call it- Midtown Lunch’ish food.)

Downtown Lunch: Sheng Wang

Who doesn’t love having their noodles hand pulled? Wait… let me rephrase that. I love pulling my noodle! Shit wait, no that’s wrong again. For great hand pulled noodles check out Sheng Wang on Eldridge street (that’s better). I had lunch there after being told about it from the same friend who told me about Lan Zhou last summer, but she said that since discovering Sheng Wang, it’s her go-to HPNJ (hand pulled noodle joint).

Downtown Lunch: Spend Chinese New Year at Nice Green Bo

NICE GREEN BO RESTAURANT 7s

In celebration of the Chinese New Year which is this Monday, Jan 26th, I wanted to review what I consider one of Chinatown’s elite restaurants, Nice Green Bo. Formerly New Green Bo, the ownership changed hands last March and the “New” became “Nice”. Whatever. As long as they don’t mess up the food they can call themselves Big Dongers Chinatown Food Hut (I think that name may actually already exist).

Downtown Lunch: Big Wong

Downtown Lunch: Big Wong

For some reason whenever I hear someone mention Big Wong in Chinatown, I hear a gong sound go off in my head.. maybe I’m just thinking of an association with the Sixteen Candles character (of a different but similar sounding name). Word on the street is they have one of the cheapest lunch specials in the city, but I had never tried it so went with a friend to scope out the situation earlier this week. I was impressed with the number of lunch specials, all around the $4.50 range.

Downtown Lunch: Is Wah Ji/Hua Ji Better Than Excellent Pork Chop House

Midtown workers shouldn’t have all the fun, so to even the score, I’ve brought on Daniel Krieger as an official Downtown Lunch Correspondent to write up some of the tasty stuff you can get in the lower half of Manhattan. He’s a great photographer (ensuring good food porn), but more importantly he is a lover of cheap, unique and delicious eats (or as I like to call it- Midtown Lunch’ish food.)

Downtown Lunch: Wah Ji

Wah Ji Pork Chop fast food has a bigger name than the space it occupies, having recently opened in a small cubbyhole on Allen street. Word of this spot came through a tip by our Midtown Happy Hour correspondent Mamacita, who saw it posted on chowhound ….gracias mama! After reading a few of the reviews I wanted to check it out for myself, having seen several posters compare (and ultimately diss) Excellent Pork Chop House.

Downtown Lunch: Lan Zhou Handmade Noodles

Midtown workers shouldn’t have all the fun, so to even the score, I’ve brought on Daniel Krieger as an official Downtown Lunch Correspondent to write up some of the tasty stuff you can get in the lower half of Manhattan. Downtown Lunch: Lan Zhou Handmade Noodles

Unfortunately I don’t speak Chinese, so I didn’t know the name of the noodle shop on 144 East Broadway which doesn’t have any English words on the front. Fortunately though other parts of my body (nose and tummy) could care less if the words were written in Swahili or Hebrew. The language of love for me this week was found in the narrow quarters of 144 East Broadway, home to good cheap hand pulled noodles and dumplings.  (I found out later alot of people call it Lan Zhou, although that’s really just the region where this style of noodle comes from.)

Downtown Lunch: Excellent Pork Chop House

Making Downtown office workers jealous is something this blog has been doing for awhile now. To even the score, I’ve brought on Daniel Krieger as an official Downtown Lunch Correspondent to write up some of the tasty stuff you can get in the lower half of Manhattan. How are you supposed to find the right Chinatown spot for a cheap lunch that is going to be better than the 100 other similar spots dotted on a downtown map? Well you can read this column every Friday to start. Or you can ask friends who work in the Chinatown area, which is what I did to find the Excellent Pork Chop House. I asked a friend of mine what her favorite place was for lunch and she immediately said, “Excellent Pork Chop House” on Doyers street. The name of the place is pretty confident and clear. If you go there you gotta try the pork chop because well, it’s probably going to be excellent. If it isn’t they should change the name to something else.   Read more »
