Take Two Of Long Island Bagel Cafe: A Look At The Bagels In Sandwich Form

You may have read about the loaded knish I sampled at Long Island Bagel Cafe earlier in the week, but you may be wondering how their bagels are. I was too, so while I was there I also got a bagel sandwich since a salad or soup was unappealing. Like Leo’s Bagels or Zucker’s over in Tribeca, they make their own bagels in many varieties and offer all of the smoked fish and such that go along with them. I opted to go for a more traditional sandwich to offset the knish gutbomb.

There are many sandwich options including some preset selections, smoked fish, a bunch of different salads and deli meats. I built my own with turkey, lettuce, swiss and deli mustard on a wheat everything bagel ($7.50). All of the sandwiches come with your choice of side salad and a whole dill pickle.

The good news was that the bagel was good – not the best I’ve ever had, but good. It wasn’t so chewy that I couldn’t bite through in without wrecking my sandwich which is sometimes a downfall of the bagel sandwich. They did not skimp on the turkey, either, but the bad news was that there wasn’t nearly enough deli mustard to offset how dry this meat was. I ended up taking about half of it off so I could eat the sandwich without developing dry mouth.

They do have by far the largest selection of bagels in the upper part of the FiDi, as well as other breakfasts. I also thought the sandwich was a good deal since it came with a side and pickle instead of just a bag of chips.

Have any of the rest of you eaten at Long Island Bagel Cafe since they opened? Give us your thoughts in the comments.
