My Belly’s Playlist: The Lunch You’d Never Pack For Yourself

It took me about four trips to the website of My Belly’s Playlist to figure out what exactly this was. The 10 sandwiches on offer sounded really good and once I discovered through my digging that they were all $10 I got even more interested. But how could I procure one of these delicious beasts? It seemed that delivery was the only option and when co-founder/partner Bo Kim e-mailed later in the week, that was indeed the case. It’s operated out of the Yorganic store at Hanover Sq. & Broad, but you can’t actually order any of the sandwiches while walking in there. Clearly I was going to have to get lazy and let my fingers order up some lunch.

My sandwich of choice was the “song” California Roll, and the “music” within was jumbo lump crab in citrus aioli, sesame toasted nori flakes, cucumber ribbon, wasabi avocado cream and soy marinated carrot “tobiko” on two brioche rolls. When I ordered this I thought it would be two slider-size sandwiches, but instead I basically got two small sandwiches absolutely stuffed with ingredients. It was messy and delicious and did vaguely represent a deconstructed sushi roll. The only fail was the pretty but terrible to eat cucumber ribbon. I ended up having to wrap it around a fork like spaghetti.

This was a four course lunch, though. Before I ate the sandwich I slurped up the amuse bouche (I don’t think we’ve ever used that word on this site!) that was a cube of balsamic vinegar jelly.

Then came the standout for me – curried potato salad. I could eat an entire container of this for lunch and call it good. Dessert was what may have been chocolate chunk biscotti but was more like a dense chocolate chunk cookie. Either way, this was a delicious lunch box.

The only caveat to My Belly’s Playlist is if you’re the only person ordering, like I was, you end up having to add on a drink because the delivery minimum is $12 before tax. So make some friends in your office or building, if only for the sake of ordering a lunch box from here. I’m pretty glad this delivery option exists, and the debut came at the perfect time of year for not wanting to go outside for lunch.

  • Ahhh! Looks and sounds so good! I’m super jealous that I’m too far north to get delivered to.

  • haha that is kind of the weirdest lunch ever, but I love it!

  • Delivery time using grubhub was one hour and ten minutes at 12:30 on a recent Thursday.

California roll sandwich overpowered by too much wasabi.

Vegetarian sandwich was outstanding, as was the amuse and shredded cucumber salad.

A solid new option for lunch. Just need to get my order in a bit earlier next time.
