Duane Reade Commits More Crimes Against Asian Food

While buying non-food related items in the Duane Reade at Fulton & Pearl I couldn’t resist seeing what they had in the prepared food section. Nestled next to some hummus and granola parfaits (and the infamous sushi), I spotted this veggie japchae. I was not willing to part with $5 to confirm that this is terrible, but apparently some other people were because there were only two containers of it  left. I can handle a drugstore selling crappy packaged sandwiches and yogurt, but where will they draw the line?

Get Half Off At Prince St. Cafe: Those of you up in SoHo/Nolita, here's a deal for you. You can get $15 worth of food for $7.50 at the Prince St. Cafe on Prince (btw. Lafayette & Bowery) by going here. It's valid for a while, but you have to buy the deal in the next few days.

Soma’s Korean May Not Be The Cheapest, But It’s Pretty Much Our Only Option

I know everyone complains that we don’t have a lot of food variety down in the Financial District, and that’s partly true. There is a source of decent Korean food (no, not the best you’ve ever had) at Soma By Nature on William St. (btw. Fulton & John). Chris had checked out the kimchi stew here as a cure for what ailed him and wasn’t too impressed. I went a different route and tried some of the rice-based dishes that may not have transported me to Korea, but did make me a happy lunch’er. Read more »

Two Course Thai Lunch For Less Than $10: If you work in the northern reaches of Tribeca take note - 35 Thai on Lispenard (nr. Church) has a two-course $8.95 lunch deal with an appetizer and main. The best part is it doesn't look like it's a limited time deal.

PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Jennifer”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have lunch’er Jennifer who will eat pretty much everything and is jealous of a certain area of the city that is a food truck magnet.

 width=Name: Jennifer, aka, Saikai

Occupation: Margin/cashiering clerk

Where you work: Wall St.

Favorite Kinds of Food: When it comes to food I’ll eat just about anything once to try it.  As for a favorite it would defintely have to be anything sweet.

Least Favorite Foods: Anything overly spicy, whether it’s spicy hot or just has too much spice in general.

Favorite Lunches Downtown: Cheese enchiladas from Tajin on Greenwich (btw. Edgar & Rector), the daily special or chicken tempura roll from Niko Niko on Pearl (btw. Wall & Pine), lamb over rice with chickpeas and white sauce from Xpress Power Lunch on Wall & Pearl, bruschetta slice from Da Vinci’s on Water (btw. Broad & William), and the Caesar salad with cranberries substituted for croutons from Just Salad on Maiden Lane (btw. Gold & Pearl). Read more »

Paper Goes Up On New Crisp Location

About a month ago news broke that a location of Crisp was opening down in the Financial District. This was pretty exciting news for falafel lovers who don’t like standing in line at a street cart for their fix. Paper and temporary signage are up on the coming location at Fulton & Williams streets, although it’s not expected to open until December.

Brazilian Food On The Cheap At Barzinho Is Totally Worth Heading To Tribeca

I don’t know about you all, but Brazilian food isn’t really something I think about or even think I can eat for lunch. Sure, there’s Churrascaria, but I’m not rich enough to eat there. Right next door to that on W. Broadway (btw. Franklin & White) is bright yellow Barzinho, or the place where there are a bunch of lunch options for $10. Lunch’er Chris passed along the intel on this intriguing lunch deal. Find out if it’s worth going out of your way for and see the +/- after the jump. Read more »
