PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Brownie”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown.  Three weeks we profiled “Blondie” half of the duo that runs the blog http://blondieandbrownie.blogspot.com.  Today, Alex (aka “Brownie”) gets her moment in the sun…

Name: Brownie

Age:
Mid-Twenties

Occupation:
Publishing (and 1/2 of the blogging team “Blondie and Brownie“)

Where in Midtown do you Work?:
Rock Center Area

Favorite Kind of Food:
Cupcakes, peanut butter, cheese, dark chocolate, New Haven pizza, Ethiopian, Korean, Greek, and Indian.

Least Favorite Kind of Food:
Cottage Cheese. Yuck.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown:
Kwik Meal’s lamb pita (45th & 6th), grilled cheese with gruyere and caramelized onion from ‘wichcraft, chicken pita platter from the cart on 53rd and 6th, red lentil soup from Dervish Turkish (47th btw. 6+7th), small combo with moudardara and mousakka from Bread and Olive (45th btw. 5+6th), spicy pork and the kimchi pancakes from Woorijip (32nd btw. B’way+5th), and plain fro-yo from Forty Carrots (yes, I consider fro-yo lunch).

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Ever since I discovered Midtown Lunch, I’ve ditched the old go-to spots. Just say no to overpriced soups at Hale and Hearty. I still shudder when my co-workers order in from Pronto Pizza. Not my kind of pie.

Place you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? I will always be grateful to ML for breaking the news that the cart on the SE corner of 53rd and 6th is the same as the night cart on the SW corner of 53rd and 6th. Cut my wait time in the evening and brought their chicken pita into my lunching world. Thanks, Zach!

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? I went to school in the village and I miss some of the cheap eats there. And Downtown lunch correspondent, Daniel Krieger is making me a bit jealous. I’d work in Chinatown solely for access to cheap and authentic bahn mi and roast pork buns.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? I love cupcakes. I’ve tried Cucina, I’ve tried the ones from Dean and Deluca, from Crumbs, Zaros, and most recenlty the Treats Truck. Am I missing any notable Midtown cupcakes?

Cupcake recs in the comments please…

And as always, if you want to be the next Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er, or you’d like to nominate somebody in your office, email me at zach@midtownlunch.com

  • Totally cute girl. Midtown lunch is great!

  • Not mid-town. But i heard the cupcakes being sold at the Ft. Greene flea market might be really good.

  • Out of official Midtown range, but I’m a fan of Buttercup at 52nd and 2nd. It used to be my favorite cupcake in the city until I went to Sugar Sweet Sunshine recently, which (har-dee-har-har) took the cake for me.

  • even though it’s been RUINED by SATC, I still like Magnolia’s red velvet cupcakes, and they have two locations, Bleecker st, and one on Columbus ave and 69th st.

  • Ooo…I forgot Whole Foods, as well! I like the Whole Foods cupcakes, as happily mass produced as they are – Columbus Circle. And Amy’s Bread on 9th Ave. – not my absolute fave but they do the trick nicely.

  • I have a feeling one of the boys is going to make a dirty joke about that tasty finger….

  • I love the sugary vegan cupcakes from Babycakes…mmmmm goood.

  • Hey aren’t those Blondie’s sunglasses? If Zach the Slack would ever update the MLer’s list I wouldn’t have to go searching to compare photos (okay I don’t, besides having it bookmarked and set as my homepage it’s my wallpaper as well).

Sorry, I can’t help on the cc front, I’m not really into individualy portioned food but if you like I can bring an Entenman’s Fudge cake to the meetup and the three of us can lick each others fingers afterwards. Let me know, thanks.

  • Slightly out of range, but Burgers and Cupcakes on 9th Ave and 36th(?) – sells exactly what the name says – has got great cupcakes. Their marble cake with a chocolate ganache/peanut butter frosting combo is out of this world.

  • For the love of God people – it is Banh Mi not Bahn Mi. If you love it so much then at least spell it correctly.

  • Brownie…you’re doing a heck of a job!

  • My favorite cupcakes aren’t in midtown unfortunately. If you’re ever in the LES, go to Sugar Sweet Sunshine. I’d love to know if you find a good cupcake place in midtown, please share!

  • For more cupcakes try –
    Amy’s on 9th
    Burgers & Cupcakes
    Little Pie Company
    Cupcake Cafe

Not the best ever, but all are solid sweets!

  • Best cupcakes ever? Vanilla Bake Shop in Santa Monica (key lime pie cupcakes???? delicious!!!!). No real notable cupcakes in midtown (Crumbs is probably the best you’ll get). I second Sugar Sweet Sunshine in the LES as best in the city.

  • Yes, she’s wearing my glasses, but, Bossman, unlike me, she’s spoken for.

  • Crumbs definitely has the most variety. Cupcake Cafe icing is delicious, but the cake can be hit or miss. Little Pie company rocks for pies.

I used to get cupcakes at My Most Favorite Food Company and they are still reliably good. It’s a sit down kosher restaurant, but they do take out of the baked goods displayed in the window. The cupcakes only come in vanilla or chocolate. It’s on 45th just west of 6th Ave.

  • The cupcakes at Brooklyn Flea are entirely too small for my liking. The Brownies (hint hint, Brownie) they have there are AMAZING though. I like cupcake cafe ones, but that’s also out of ML range.

  • ….Mayhap even a hint of liv………..but again..dark glasses…….hummmffff.

Aside: The woman in the background…..a reason why spandex/lycra should be licensed to people below a certain weight.

  • Zach, I think you need to start putting “marital status” in the profile – spending time reading 15 comments and coming up with a sexually harassing remark only to find out the lady is spoken for is simply unacceptable.

    Hey Brownie, nice…… brows
