PROFILED: Midtown Lunch’er “Jake”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. Today it’s Jake, an actress (yes, you heard that correctly… Jake is a girl) and theater manager  by night/executive assistant by day, who is looking for the best french fries in Midtown.

Name: Jake (Yes it’s a guys name. No it’s not short for anything.)

Age:
31

Occupation:
I’m an actor/theatre producer, but I make a living as executive assistant.

Where in Midtown do you Work?:
45th & 6th

Favorite Kind of Food:
Anything spicy or with shellfish. And I always have to eat a hot lunch.

Least Favorite Kind of Food:
Yogurt. Even the smell of it is revolting to me.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown:
Pam Real Thai (49th btw. 9+10th) for delivery, Pam Real Thai Encore (47th btw. 9+10th) for eat in. My friend Liz got me hooked on their chichen laarb and vegetarian pad thai. Pam’s versions are really light and delicious.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Kwik Meal Cart (SW Corner of 6th & 45th St.) I get veggies over rice, but their falafel and lamb are just as amazing. The chef gets profiled all the time – seriously, it’s way better than anything made in a “Kart” should be. I also get soup and a half sandwich at Pret a Manger once a week — their butternut squash soup is so good!

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Paris, near an old-school bistro with perfect open-faced Croque Monsieurs.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers?: Where can you get really good fries around here?

Well… that’s an easy one for me.  My favorite french fries in Midtown after the jump…

Large Fry & Soda @ Five Guys, Midtown

The fries at Five Guys (55th btw. 5+6th).  Fresh cut from actual potatoes, they’re not too thick, not too thin.  Perfecto!  My favorite use of fries, would have to be stuffed into a shawarma sandwich at Pick a Pita (38th btw. 7+8th). But that’s a whole different category…zach@midtownlunch.com

Got a recommendation for Jake. Post it in the comments below. And as always, if you want to be the next Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er, or you’d like to nominate somebody in your office, email me at zach@midtownlunch.com

I second the Five Guys Fries, but you have to eat them quick, right out of the fryer almost, or they tend to get soggy…

For thick, crispy, deli style steak fries go to Berger’s Deli on 39th and 5th. You also have to eat them quick so they don’t get soggy.

That being said, how many places really have fries that are much better than McDonald’s?

The fries at BXL are the best! Crispy, golden, hot, and delicious. They are addictive and dangerous.

I second the fries at BXL on 43rd b/t Bdwy and 6th. Though it’s possible they are so yummy because I usually have them with a beer and a plate of mussels.

Best chips ever..hmmmmmmm… Magpie Cafe, Whitby, North Yorkshire.

Double Cooked in Beef Dripping.

Would of suggested A Salt & Battery, but they have caved into the health police and use Veggie oil.

It’s a little outside of Midtown Lunch boundaries, but Sandwich Planet on 9th Ave between 39th/40th has AMAZING fries.

Waaaaay out of bounds, but Bonnies in brooklyn makes the best fries. I think they’re fried in liquid crack, that addictive.

I live 3 blocks from Bonnies, the fries are definitely outrageous but their lifespan, in my experience, is very short and they must be eaten immediately.
