Bits & Pieces (Openings, Closings, Plywood & Unpaid Bills Edition)

  • Sakae Sushi (43rd btw. Lex+3rd), the conveyor belt sushi place from Singapore that was hoping to be open by the end of the year- looks nowhere close to being open (as you can tell from the photo taken above on Monday).  I’m still super excited…

  • Zen Burger (Lex btw. 44+45th) is saying they will open on January 3rd.

Sohpie’s Cuban News, another Hing Won/Hop Won spinoff, and 2nd Ave. Deli stuff, after the jump…

  • The Sophie’s Cuban on Madison btw. 33+34th will no longer be a Sophie’s Cuban starting January 1st.  It will still serve Latin food, but it won’t be a Sophie’s franchise anymore.  As one goes away, another will finally see the light.  The new Sophie’s that has been in construction for awhile on 40th st. btw. 7+8th is supposed to open sometime in January.  *Update*  According to a commenter the Sophie’s on 56th btw. 5+6th will also no longer be a Sohpie’s after the new year.
  • First Hing Won.  Then Hop Won.  Apparently there is also Kar Won on 60th btw. Lex+3rd.
  • The 2nd Ave. Deli is now Open on 33rd btw. Lex+3rd.  Gothamist had the preview photos, Eater had the salami cutting ceremony, NYMag has the video, and EIT had a photo of the line.   Too bad the prices don’t really pass the Midtown Lunch standards…

  • The Sophie’s on 56th between 5th and 6th also has had signs up announcing an impending name change.

  • It looks like Hop Won and Kar Won have essentially similar prices (low) while Hing Won is significantly more expensive. The West Side has higher overhead or what?
