Profile: Midtown Lunch’er “Liz”

Every Tuesday I turn over Midtown Lunch to a random Midtown worker, for their favorite places to eat lunch in Midtown.  This week, it’s Liz.  A Midtown East Saints fan who like me, would rather be eating Lunch in New Orleans!

Name: Liz

Age:
27

Occupation:
CPA

Where in Midtown do you Work?:
Near Grand Central

Favorite Kind of Food:
Specifically, macaroni and cheese… but really anything involving cheese (except for blue), anything from New Orleans, seafood and beans.  If it has any of those ingredients (or preferably multiple), or is from NOLA, you can count me in.

Least Favorite Kind of Food:
Meatloaf

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown:
Park Italian Deli (45th btw. 5&6th).  If I’m in the mood for hot food, the eggplant parm with whatever the pasta special of the day is.  Otherwise, a sandwich of usually tuna salad or ham, turkey and fresh mozzarella.

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often:  The Lunchbox (in the Graybar building attached to Grand Central).  Not necessarily for lunch (except on a rainy day), but definitely a go to breakfast.  Where else can you find a giant iced coffee for $1?

Place you discovered on MidtownLunch.com:  Oms/b.  Only tried it once, but it was pretty great.  And I really need to check out Sophie’s Cuban.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why?  Definitely New Orleans (nothing beats a fried shrimp po’boy from Rodosta’s), but since that angle has already been covered by another Midtown Lunch’er, I’ll go with the East Village… specifically Avenues B&C.  It’d be a toss up between the Fettuccine al Sugo Toscano at Max, the Manchego sandwich at Grape and Grain and the Kasespatzle at Zum Schneider.

Liz’s question to Midtown Lunch nation, our recommendations, plus how you can be the next Profiled Midtown Lunch’er, after the jump…

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers?  I used to work at 45th & 6th and am baffled by how much better the lunching selections are in Midtown West vs. Midtown East.  Can anybody suggest anything East of of Madison… specifically near Grand Central.  I’m dying over here!

I feel no sympathy for you… if I worked where you worked, I’d eat at Menchanko-Tei & Oms/b every single day!  If you love Mac ‘n Cheese, I read about a new place called Supermac opening up on 30th & 7th Ave.  Who knows?  Maybe it will be worth the walk… Based on your favorites, I think you’d also like Macchiatto Espresso Bar on 44th btw. Lex. & 3rd.  The coffee isn’t $1, but I’ve heard their sandwiches are really good.

Anybody else have suggestions for Liz?  Post them in the comments section below…

  • I also work in the lunch abyss known as the Grand Central area. My go-to place is Old Bridge Deli on 41st and Lex, which has a decent grill (best breakfast special in the area… $1.50 for a large coffee and a bagel with butter) and passable Bi Bim Bap. Their hot bar is OK… good grilled chicken. The salad bar is unusually fresh.

For other places, I love the Vegetable Garden on 41st near the library (kosher and fresh), and you’ve got to try GoodPortions. It’s at about 39th or 40th on Lex. They have a sampling of just about every Asian style of food, from Malaysian to Japanese – Pad Thai, Basil Chicken and any of the soups are awesome (and reasonably priced for the portion you get, hence the name).

Oh, and in the big black building, 101 Park, there’s a make-your-own yogurt bar in the mornings at the 41st street entrance. Lots o’ fruit and granola and stuff.

Also, I’ve heard the Cipriani cafe in the basement sells all their packaged lunches at half price after 3.

  • Wow, considering all of your preferences and location, I’d recommend a move to the Big Easy… Rodastas Rocks!

  • She’s cute! Maybe it’s the picture or maybe it’s the fact that her name is Liz, but when I looked I thought “Liz Hurley!”

  • I’m glad people are still going to Park Italian Deli after the incident. A friend of mine, his relatives own it and he thought no one would ever fo back there after what happened there over the summer…Thanks Liz, it is nice to find people who aren’t CLEAN FREAKS! See you at the deli.

  • Liz Hurley? Dude…

  • Wasn’t she in goonies?

  • There’s this little place on 43rd between Vanderbuilt and Madison called Patrick Conways. Try the BlackJack burger. Great bartenders….

    “where everybody knows your name….”

  • There’s a lamb and chicken cart around 45th and Madison where you can get the best 5 dollar lunch around – get the white sauce and the red sauce mixed.

Lamb and Chicken = 5 dolla holla

  • Holy hand grenade, Batman! I’m sorry, please don’t be pissed at me for saying this, but she’s a cutie patootie!

  • Love some of her selections. Is she single? She’d be perfect for my friend Ian…

  • she’s really pretty

  • It’s about time the east side got a little love on this blog… Dare I say we need an East side midtown lunch blog? Lenny’s and Krunch does not qualify as a worthy review of the fine eating establishments on this side of 3rd.

    Blog on!
