Street Meat Palooza Nominations Are Now Open (You Didn’t Think We Forgot Did You?)
It’s a little late this year, but Street Meat Palooza 7 is definitely happening. We’ve got a slight major twist this year, but we still want your feedback. Got a favorite plate of street meat that you think deserves to be in the canon, alongside previous winners like The Famous Halal Guys, Kwik Meal, Comme Ci Comme Ca, Trini Paki, and Uncle Gussy’s? Just leave it in the comments below and we’ll consider it for this years palooza. Oh, and the more votes a cart or truck gets, the more chance it will be chosen- so don’t let somebody else’s comment deter you for leaving your own.

+1 for Trini Paki Boys. Their jerk chicken and chicken tikka masala is better than anything else from any cart in NY (just my two cents).
-
XPL was the only good street meat I had this year (I moved too far from Mr Khan)

Yes I thought you had forgot! My suggestion is that you open the contest to all of the previous winners as well as anyone else.
That being said, are Carnegie John’s and Everyday Fresh still on the streets?

I’ll second the Carnegie John nod, who remains my favorite lunch near my office (57th and 7th).
Also, I’d like to nominate Kebab Express, the halal cart on the SE corner of 55th St. and 6th Ave. The trick is getting the basmati rice (“brown rice”) and getting the green hot sauce in addition to the red. It’s some of the best street meat around if you order right. It’s pedestrian if you get it with the yellow rice.

There’s a cart on 47th between 2nd and 3rd that has the best street meat in the city. They give you quality grilled chicken and lamb and their rice is fantastic. Unfortunately, my office moved and is no where near this cart, but this cart is better than Trini Paki (which I have frequently) and on par with the famous halal guys
-
There’s a generic cart on 41st between 5th and Madison across the street from cafe zaiya, it seems to be a rafiqi knock off that I go to and I’d be curious to see how it stacks up to the original by the street meat intelligentsia.

Free donut (3 choices) from Sweetery Truck on 42nd st between 5th and 6th ave. Happening right now.

Dave:
Freddy’s King of Falafel (though it’s not gyro, at least in the traditional sense)
Halal Guys at 53/7, because they’re good people and they still have the best rice at a cart
XPL typically at 48th/Park for cheap classic street meat
-
-
Uncle Gussy’s (how have they not won yet?) and a Rafiqi’s, any location. (BTW SirCh, ‘better than Trini-Paki and on par with famous halal’ is a logical inconsistency, because Trini-Paki >>famous halal.)
-
Uncle Gussy’s did win, which is why they’re no longer eligible (which is why I suggested to Zach that they scrap that rule).
-
Oops! Forgot, and saw another vote for them so I thought they were still eligible. Hey, maybe for SMPX we can have a face-off of all previous winners (and maybe #2) from the previous SMPs?

I walk ten blocks and three avenues for Trini Paki. And it is TOTALLY WORTH IT.
-
Cart on SW corner of 54th and Park
Cart on NW corner of 52nd and 6th
King of Falafel and Shawarma
Rafiquis truck on NE corner of 52nd and Park -
-
The Famous Halal Guys (53/6, SW corner, previously occupied by the Imposters!)
-
King of Falafel and Shawarma.
I agree that it’s time to reassess past winners

I can’t remember if he’s been in years past but the fella on the north side of 41st St. btw 5th and Madison has become by go to. Very nice guy too, would like to see him get the attention.

The founder of Xian foods seem to endorse this one cart:
“Q: What’s in your refrigerator right now?
A: A lot of things that I should throw out. Edible things include kefir drinks, Just Mayo (courtesy of Andrew Zimmern), eggs, and chicken and rice from Abel’s on 49th and 6th (not the Halal Guys).”

Uncle Gussy’s easy every year. I just wish they weren’t so far away.
