Melt Shop Answers My Prayers, Brings Back Buffalo Blue

Melt Shop

Melt Shop on 50th between 6th and 7th Ave

At the beginning of the year, I stopped by Melt Shop’s new location on 50th (btw. 6th and 7th) to check out the new digs. In my review, I made clear my disappointment at the removal of some of their old menu items, specifically, the Buffalo Blue. Well, on a recent visit to Melt Shop, the Buffalo Blue had returned as the Buffalo. It was clear that the return of this delicious grilled cheese was in direct response to my post, so the least I could do was give it a try and see if it was still good enough to hold the #1 spot in my heart.

Melt Shop’s Buffalo Blue was definitely my favorite grilled cheese from their old menu so I was obviously a bit rattled when I learned it had been removed from the menu. They still offered a grilled cheese with their tasty fried chicken, but it just wasn’t the same.

The Buffalo is fried chicken, pepper jack cheese, and a blue cheese buffalo sauce.

As always, the fried chicken was the real star of this grilled cheese. It’s always scorching hot, perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The pepper jack takes a backseat to the blue cheese buffalo sauce, which manages to provide great buffalo flavor without being overwhelming. If they served fried chicken tenders with this dipping sauce, I would order it every single time.

My only real issue with the sandwich was the number of tenders, and their placement on the grilled cheese. For $9, you would expect enough fried chicken to fill the entire grilled cheese. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. I can appreciate the argument that arranging the chicken on the sandwich isn’t a perfect science, as you don’t want it falling out with each bite, but you want to make sure there’s enough chicken to cover the entire sandwich.

As you can see, the back end on one of the halves was completely empty – barely any cheese, and definitely no chicken. Again, at $9, this is a little ridiculous. I am such a big fan of this chicken, I let it slide, but there has to be a better way to fill up the sandwich!
