Flatiron Lunch: A Milanes Revisit Pays Off

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Passing by Milanes always ignited jealously that Clay got there first. But I knew this gem would need a repeat visit.

The menu caused me some confusion, and I can’t say I am any wiser after my visit. Basically, Milane’s has awesome looking breakfast options and they have certain dishes they make everyday for lunch (roast chicken, boiled chicken, roast pork). On top of that, they have a rotating list specials. But after I ordered, when I tried to ask about the other specials, I definitely got the gringa answer, which is to say I was told about the dishes I already knew about (chicken and pork). But there might be the possibility for oxtail, goat or liver for those that persevere.

I ordered the boiled chicken to-go for $9. But I didn’t have to run back to work, I could have stayed to eat and paid only $7.99. For my meal, I had the option of white or yellow rice and black or pinto beans and a can of soda. I confused the lady by asking for both black and pinto beans, since the beans actually come in a coffee cup on the side instead of in the platter. So as I requested, I got a cup of mixed black and pinto beans. I loved everything about this meal, especially the simplicity of the whole meal. Just delicious food.

THE + (What people who like this place will say)

  • Traditional and simple food.
  • Great meal deal, especially if you get your meal to stay.

THE – (What people who don’t like this place will say)

  • They make it too difficult to figure out the daily/specials menu.
  • They don’t like to offer the more interesting meals to the gringa.
