Hard-to-Find Pennylane is Brewing Quality Coffee

Midtown East is steadily building a good crop of independent coffee houses. Lucid Cafe, Ground Central, Demarco… they all offer an array of great coffee and espresso drinks. Now you can count Pennylane Coffee (45th btw. 1st+2nd) on that list.

You’d be forgiven for walking right by Pennylane, as they don’t have a sign out front. Think of it as an espresso speakeasy. Inside, they’re brewing up a variety of drinks, featuring Stumptown coffee and an assortment of teas. The prices are pretty much in line with most coffee houses, with drinks going for around $2-4.

You won’t get your lunch fix at Pennylane, but they do offer some tasty looking baked goods, including cookies, pastries, and croissants. I was particularly intrigued by the croissants, which when I was there included savory options like artichoke and goat cheese.

So how’s the coffee? I ordered a cortado for $3.50 and was very happy. It was smooth and creamy with just the right amount of bitterness. No sugar required. It’d probably go great with a croissant.
