Flatiron Lunch: Openings and Curry Hill (It Should Always Include Curry Hill)

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Last month, Zach emailed me that Bombay Sandwich Co. is opening a small brick and mortar shop primarily for take-out in the Flatiron area. Bombay Sandwich Co. is a regular vendor at Smorgasburg, although I don’t remember seeing them or eating their sandwiches during my previous chow-downs there, but sandwiches with Indian flavors sound like my bag. The menu will be primarily vegan, which we all know works well for Indian food. I plan to try a new sandwich they will be offering, the Chana Malasa. Mmmm. Love spicy stewed chickpeas.

Last week, the store front looked like this with their website projecting a “fall” opening (I think I read mid-November elsewhere.) They are located in the same public plaza as Melt Shop, but one block north. Feel free to post in the comments if you notice it has opened.

In other Indian food news, Robert Sietsema posted on Eater a couple weeks ago his old and new Curry Hill favorites. Looking at his list, Flatiron Lunch has covered some of his favorites, but there are a few places that have moved up my list, including Bhojan, Paradise Biryani Pointe and Madras Mahal.

He says there are 24 restaurants that make up Curry Hill, which means I still have a lot of work to do! Also, he notes a distinction between saag (mustard greens) and palak (spinach). I am going to have to do some further investigation (and eating) on this one, as I have never heard of this distinction. It seems to me that these terms have been used interchangeably.

Just south of the Flatiron building, Club Monaco has created a coffee shop/bookshop with the team of Toby’s Estate Coffee of Williamsburg and the Strand (a place that makes me so happy that I don’t mind that they take all my money.) Toby’s Flatiron will be serving primarily coffee, but MadParkNews noted they should be offering sandwiches and baked goods. I called the Williamsburg location to find out more (including a phone number for the Flatiron location), but they had no additional information about the location. Thanks to MadParkNews for the photo.
