Earl of Sandwich Opens Today

Earl of Sandwich

Yesterday’s free sandwich giveaway was just a test run… New York’s first outpost of the Earl of Sandwich chain (52nd St between 5th and 6th Ave) is scheduled to open for regular lunch service today at 11am. To celebrate the opening, the descendant of the original inventor of the sandwich, John Mantagu the 11th Earl of Sandwich, will be on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony, along with pals Kenan Thompson (SNL) and Miss New York USA Amber Collins.

Is it worth going there today or will it be a madhouse?

Went over there at 11:40 with a few friends and told it wasn’t opening till 12 b/c there was a private party going on inside. The COO walked out at noon saying that there was an issue (with one of their machines?) this morning at 6 a.m. and they were waiting for it to be fixed so they weren’t sure when it would open. He said maybe 10 minutes, maybe half an hour. We left and didn’t get a chance to try it…anyone else stay?

  • They’re attached to my building (interior door to the place). As with all the other places formerly and currently with such a setup, I’ll give them a chance before ignoring them forevermore.

    • Went yesterday.

      Pluses:
      Very tasty hot sandwich
      herbed bread, toasted beautifully
The line moves quickly even though it looks long

      Minuses:
Bunched up at the end waiting for said sandwich to appear
Appears people take sandwiches not meant for them
Not very filling, though the price is fine for what you get

Overall, a high-quality, but small, sandwich. Kinks to be worked out regarding the two-entrance setup, but I could see coming here for a late-afternoon bridge between lunch and dinner.

  • considering today should be a “quieter” day (friday before a holiday), it may be worth a shot.

  • aaaand they just cut the ribbon.

  • went just before 1pm. in and out in less than 10 min.

    Oooohhh, my gosh!!
I can’t believe they are finally here in NY!!!
    PHENOMENAL !!!!!! AWESOME !!!!!!
    I LOVE IT !!!

  • Tried these guys yesterday…and again today. Loved the original and the tuna melt. Very tasty, perfectly-sized portion (non-coma inducing).

I can’t help but comment however, that the ENTIRE workforce of over a dozen people, were all black and a few brown, except for 2 of the 3 blue shirt wearing managers. Earl of non-PC images, since 1762.

  • I went last week. I had the original roast beef sandwich. The meat was tender and slightly fatty. The bread was good. The cheese was great. They have a system that makes the long lines move quickly. I definitely want to get back there.
