Win a Slot at Street Meat Palooza 3

That right… it’s time.

For the past two years a select group of Midtown Lunch’ers have been chosen to converge on a single location to eat an ungodly amount of street meat, from 15 different carts in Midtown, and crown a winner.  Two years ago, the Famous Halal Guys (on 53rd and 6th) took home the top prize, but last year they were unseeded by the Kwik Meal cart (on 45th & 6th).  Both have been retired from competition, and this year 15 new carts will vie for the chance to be crowned the winner of Street Meat Palooza 3!

Just like previous years, Street Meat Palooza will not be open to the public. It is an invite only, blind tasting of 15 different plates of street meat.  But there is a way for you to win a coveted slot at the “judges” table.

Want a chance to attend?  All you have to do is nominate your favorite street meat cart in the comments and you’re registered to score a slot at Street Meat Palooza 3.  But there are a few rules so please read them closely:

1. Street meat = chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce.  Not jerk chicken.  Not biriyani.  Not schnitzel.  Not tikka masala.  It doesn’t have to necessarily be “halal” but it does have to be chicken and/or lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce.  It’s also worth noting, the carts won’t know they’re competing. The plates of street meat will be ordered on a regular day during lunchtime, each by a different Midtown Luncher.

2. Participating in previous years doesn’t exclude a cart or truck from being nominated for SMP 3, but winning does.  So Kwik Meal (on 45th and 6th) and the Famous Halal Guys cart (on the SE Corner of 53rd and 6th) will be ineligible to compete this year.  But their other carts are eligible… so feel free to nominate the Kwik Gourmet cart (on 47th and Park) or the Famous Halal Guys cart on 52nd and 6th (formerly Shendy’s.)

3. Limit one comment per person, but feel free to nominate as many vendors as you wish in that one comment.  The more votes a cart gets, the more likely it will be chosen to participate.  Carts must be located within the Midtown Lunch’ing boundaries… that’s 8th Ave. to the West, 3rd Ave. to the East, Central Park to the North, and 32nd to the South.

4.  If you are chosen to attend the event, you may be asked to bring the food from the cart that you nominated.  (We’ll pay you back, of course!)

5.  Nominations will close on Friday (4/23) at 6pm EST and the invites will be sent out at the beginning of next week.  The judging will take place sometime in May, from noon to 1:30pm at a central location in Midtown that will only be revealed to the participants.

Good luck!

Adel’s #1 Halal on SW corner of 56th/6th. It’s Miss Softie’s favorite, and I found myself growing quite fond of it.

Little Morocco on 7th and 39th

  • I dont live or work near Midtown, and I have no nominee…..but…..I would suggest that a previous winner be allowed to rejoin the competition after 5 years, ala the winner of SMP1 would be eligible to compete again in SMP6

  • Add me to the list of Little Morocco supporters.

  • Love Carnegie John’s chicken. Great to have him back, and I nominate John, Little Morocco (for their hot sauce) and XPL (for their rice).

  • I nominate the cart on Lexington at 44th Street (sadly, I don’t the name). I love the big chunks of salty chicken. One time I tried cutting out rice and bread, and they were kind enough to put a mountain of chicken and grilled onions on a salad for me. I try to avoid this corner on my way home on the nights I work late…the temptation is just too great.

  • Ameere’s on the NW corner of 43rd at 5th Avenue. Great stuff and right next to muy work so I can pick it up easy.

This is like asking a parent to pick their favorite child. Don’t tell the other kids, but XPL (48th and Park) is my favorite.

  • Jimmy’s Spot no 47th between 2nd and 3rd. A M A Z I N G! AND HUUUUUUUGGGGGEE PORTIONS!

I’d like to renominate the street cart on the SE corner of 40th and 7th. Ever since it placed #6 in the first Street Meat Palooza, it’s been one of my favorites. The chicken has a great texture being partially shredded and the lamb is cooked with peppers and onions. I mean, in the original palooza, two people made it their second favorite cart for the day, and two more put it in their top 5. I think it deserves another shot.

I also want to nominate the Trini Paki Boys. Their yellowish chicken and spicy brown sauce are so unique… like no other street meat I’ve ever tasted. On top of that, I think the vegetables (mainly cabbage) they offer to spoon on top of the rice is great. It gives those bites some extra flavor and a nice texture contrast.

  • little morrocco. = no brainer. I will leave that as my sole nomination.

The King Tut cart on 52nd & Lex, on the same block as the XPL on 52nd & 3rd. Those guys have been on that corner for over 5 years, but have recently struggled since the new XPL cart moved in on their territory. Time to show these boys some ML love.

  • Have to add 100% Halal & Healthy Food cart on NW corner of 55th & Park. Great extra spicy hot sauce.

  • anyone know if the XPL that used to be on b’way is gone forever?
