Dervish Makes a Mean Red Lentil Soup

DSC00063

It’s no secret that Midtown Lunch has traditionally had a bit of an Asian soup bias… aka Zach just didn’t eat non-Asian soups. And while I can respect his assessment that the majority of soups in midtown are overpriced and not terribly filling (I’m looking at you, Hale & Hearty!), I’m a soup fan, and try as I might, I can’t live on ramen alone. Though the dine-in menu at Dervish Turkish (on 47th btw. 6+7th) is pretty much out of the Midtown Lunch price range, they make a mean Red Lentil Soup that’s available for take out and it’s well under $10.

For $4.30 (including tax) you get soup and a large hunk of fresh pide, a crusty Turkish flat bread topped with black sesame seeds. The soup itself is pureed until smooth and has a hint of mint. Between the bread and the lentils, you have a decently filling meal. If you are a lentil soup fan, this is definitely worth trying. For those with a larger appetite I recommend hitting up the Biryani Cart (on 46th and 6th) a block away where you can get a single kati roll ($3) that should do the trick in terms of supplementing your meal and still keep your lunch under $10.

Got any other tips for non-Asian soups that make for a satisfying lunch? Put them in the comments.

  • I MAKE A MEAN RED LENTIL SOUP!

  • do you deliver to wfc? ;)

  • There’s a similar soup for a similar price at Akdeniz on 46th a couple blocks away. It comes with some fresh lemon in addition to the bread. It’s very filling, even though I have the appetite of a monster. Wonder how they compare.

  • The best non-asian soup under $10 in midtown is the maryland crab soup at GC Oyster Bar take-out window.

    BEWARE!

nice sit-down restaurant that frowns upon take-out.

Went in to order the soup to go but got terrible vibes and they seemed hesitant. I felt like I was on Seinfeld- “No soup for you!”

    What a DISAPPOINTMENT!

    • Sorry they made you feel so unwelcome! I generally just get the soup to go (typically without ordering anything else) and I’ve never had a problem. Some of the staff is more friendly than others, when I got this particular order of soup the lady actually offered me a glass of water at the bar while I waited, but it was past the lunch rush.

I recommend just phoning in the soup and picking it up–that way it’s ready for you right when you get there and you don’t have to hang around waiting which is kind of awkward because there isn’t really anywhere to stand out of the way except the bar. The last time I was there it took while to get the soup but the bread was hot, so I think it had just come out of the oven and that was the wait.

Go to cart guy instead- they might not serve the food on nice plates but at least you don’t have to deal with the attitude!
