Midtown Lunch in The Paper of Record

I don’t even really know what to say.  I started Midtown Lunch three years ago this week as an excuse to stuff my fat face during lunch.  And somehow that has lead to this? It’s kind of ridiculous.

  1. That is so cool! Good pic, too, with the Kati Rolls—I bet you even got the Times to pay. Midtown Lunch is moving on up. (To the east side!) Anyways, I hope this makes the site go CRAZY. Good Crazy!

That’s great and well-deserved PR. My only disappointment is that your son isn’t in the picture!

Dude!!! I moved to Geneva because of a fancy job. There are no street food vendors where I am, ugh. I read NYT online at lunchtime and I discover your blog! Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful! Michelin and Zagat could definitely learn a thing or two from you. Authentic! Transparent! Enthusiastic!

  5. Zach – Mazel tov! From your post I thought it was just a mention – but you’re on the first page of the food section!

  6. Wow, NYT is getting desperate, I kid I kid! Congrats! I will stuff my face with chicken house fried chicken in celebration!

  7. Zach, you’re being so humble! Here’s what’s in the NYT Dining Section:

A Tour Guide Tames Lunch in Midtown (front page story)

Mapping Out Lunch (an interactive map with Zach Brook’s voice!)

    and

What’s in the White Sauce? He Doesn’t Want to Know (a guest blog post on the Diner’s Journal blog)

  8. Congrats! You’ll probably get a huge surge of readers soon. I hope your server is up for it!

*waves* Howdy from Florida. Heard about the site through the article. Definitely going to use it the next time I’m up in NYC.

Congrats on getting a nod through the Times. :D

Congrats Zach!!! Have followed you from (almost) day 1. You definitely deserve the attention. Love the comment from the truck who moved here specifically b/c of the site. You are single handedly changing the fabric of midtown lunching! :)

what amazes me about webonomics is that you have enough people clicking on the ads to be able to do this “full time.” In the 3 years i’ve been reading the blog, i don’t believe i’ve ever clicked an ad. people must be very easily distracted or have lots of time on their hands. good for you though.

  19. Great write-up. Congrats!

  20. like usual, the Times is way late in picking up on the awesome. Congrats and thanks for making our lunch time better

  21. hurray! hopefully this raises awareness for street meat everywhere

Great article, you totally deserve this, your site is great. I’ve been working in Herald Square for eight years and really appreciate you came along to discuss some alternatives to salads and delis.

way to go. your site has been my saving grace, and has actually made me somewhat disappointed that i’m leaving midtown soon.

  25. The reporter didn’t pull a Jason Blair and not actually try the Kati roll? ha ha. Congrats Zach, you may end up getting juiced plates like when a restaurant recognizes a reviewer!

  26. That’s pretty awesome and a great write up. Congrats!

  27. Congrats Zach! I followed this site for nearly three years, and I still look forward to reading it everyday even though I no longer work in Midtown.

  28. You certainly deserve props for your services to the Midtown Lunch community. Can’t think of a cooler form recognition than having the Times acknowledge you. Congratulations!

Holy crap, anyone else go by the biryani cart today? The line was insane even by their usual standards.

  39. User has not uploaded an avatar

    I hate you, Milkman Zach.

Line at the Halal Guys cart shouldn’t be the entire length of the CBS Building.

  40. with you since the very early Hing Won days. You’re a natural story teller and it might be time to write a book. Congrats, Zach!

  41. Wow – Zach really does look a bit like Liv.

Congrats Zach! Thank you for continuing to do god’s work, and for the extra 25 pounds.

  42. 2 fucking hours on the phone with that “reporter” and NONE of my interview was even mentioned?

I guess that’s to be expected with a rag like the NYT. How quick they are to take offense at my worldview. No wonder they’re going bankrupt.

  43. And you’re above the fold too, godfather! Now I’m hungry for kati rolls. And I’m next time I bring cupcakes in Midtown in my Midtown Lunch recommended courier, I’m totally making you meet me for one! It should be soon, and they may be peanut butter s’more cupcakes.

  51. The only interviews DocChuck does is with his parole officer and with the person who renews his Arkansas food stamps every month

My sincerest congratulations and thanks for the great work you do. My parents have been living one block from both Halal carts since before there were halal carts and I’ve never had the courage to visit either during my visits. Now, thanks to you, I have a way to feed my own face while avoiding tourists and chain joints.
