Conveyor Belt Sushi Is Returning to Midtown

The only thing greater than my love of conveyor belt sushi, was my disappointment in Sakae Sushi (the kaiten place on 43rd btw. Lex+3rd that opened and closed last year.) And make no mistake about it, the disappointment had nothing to do with the conveyor belt.  The conveyor belt was awesome.  I think they closed because the food was expensive, and just not that good.  In other words, I’m convinced that conveyor belt sushi can work in Midtown… and apparently Yushi agrees with me.

The belt revealed(!) after the jump…

Yushi, the yuppie-fied sushi and bento box deli (on 47th btw. Park+Lex), has added a conveyor belt down the center of their formerly self serve only lunchtime restaurant.  Their plan is to fire up the belt two weeks from today (March 23rd), and stock it with over 40 “tapas style” dishes from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Prices will range from $1.95 to $5.95, and there will be 30 seats available around the belt (no reservations accepted.)

When Yushi first opened, I was less than enamored with their bento boxes- which were overpriced, and seemed to be more concerned with health than flavor. They’ve since won me over (a bit) with their pretty tasty soups, and interesting sushi rolls (peking duck roll anybody!?!)… and now there is this.  I’m a little concerned that the conveyor belt will be too expensive (everything at Yushi teeters the line), but if they can keep it reasonably priced, there may be complete redemption for you yet Yushi!

  • You’ll pardon me Zach for not getting my hopes up just yet… grabbing multiple plates of anything from Yushi and achieving a state of ‘not hungry’ (but not necessarily full) promises to be a $25 lunch, minimum

    $1.95 = 3 edamame beans
