Yips is Doing Just Fine…?

BBQ Chicken and Lo Mein

It’s been awhile since I’ve eaten at Yips, and I have to say I’m a little concerned about the fast food Chinese mainstay on 52nd btw. 5+6th. The last time I walked by I noticed they had condensed their operation from 2 steam tables and 3 lines, to 1 steam table and 1 line. It can’t help that better options, like Hing Won on 48th btw. 5+6th) are so close by. But Jeff from 52 Projects stopped by last week and vouches for his favorite fast food Chinese place. “Their excellent BBQ Chicken on top of Lo Mein [is] cheap, fast, plentiful-times-two, and absolutely delicious.” Well, there you have it. No need to worry…

  • Damn, doesn’t this look *really* good to anyone else here?

  • *sigh* Yips with a diet coke used to be my hangover cure of choice when I worked up there…and damn, it’s a shame about their reduced selection. I loved the variety. It was almost overwhelming trying to make a decision before it was my turn to order, squinting and pointing through the greasy steam.

  • Yip’s is perfectly fine, for what it is: a $6 lunch right next door to my office building. There’s almost always two lines, and while the steam table is “limited” to about 17-20 choices most days, they’re perfectly serviceable. And the service is still nearly Soup Man brusque, so you can feel like you’re part of the in-crowd (as much as one can be at a Chinese takeaway).

Hing Won pisses me off for raising their prices twice since spring.

  • Yips has raised their prices by 50 cents on most lunch specials and the quality has gone down. Maybe it’s due to the lower traffic but the food doesn’t taste as fresh anymore. We’ve stopped going weekly and rarely stop by now.

  • I ate there last week – Fried rice w/Garlic Shrimp: It was crap! I did go late (around 2:30pm), but no excuse for the dried/stale fried rice and measly pieces of shrimp.

Never again, never again! (not even if you paid me)
