PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Amanda”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Amanda, a UK expert for work, and a sandwich expert for fun.  (And yes, she is standing next to Austin Powers.)

Name: Amanda

Age:
31

Occupation:
Writer/Content Editor for http://www.visitbritain.com/us  (Um… where were you two weeks ago when I was in England??? -zach)

Where in Midtown do you Work?:
45th & 5th Ave.

Favorite Kind of Food:
Sandwiches, I am always on the lookout for the ultimate sandwich.

Least Favorite Kind of Food:
Boring Italian or bland Mexican food.

Favorite Place to Eat Lunch in Midtown:
A little bit outside of the boundaries maybe but tacos enchiladas at Tehuitzingo Deli on 10th Ave and 46th Street. Still haven’t found a taco that compares in NYC!  (I am a little confused by this one.  Tehuitzingo Deli has the best tacos in NYC, and is on 10th Ave. btw. 47+48th (not 46th).  And doesn’t have enchiladas.  Tulcingo del Valle has some amazing enchiladas and is on 10th Ave. btw. 46+47th.  Either way, both places are great!  -zach)

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Dishes is right across the street from our office. Mmm, $12 salads. The pastries are just so good!

Place you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: There are many… I am now the Treats Truck’s #1 fan, as well as a frequenter of the after 2PM Naples 45 slice special. I also patronize many carts, such as the Kwik Meal and the Hallo Berlin cart.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? I wouldn’t want to live there, but for lunch? Los Angeles. I have to give them props for mindblowingly good and cheap vegetarian Indian tucked away in unassuming strip malls, Diddy Reese ice cream sandwiches, numerous restaurants specializing in Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes), and the tacos!!! Angelenos really have everything except great pizza and bagels.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? I was biking past a Peruvian place this morning and I realized I don’t know much about Peruvian cuisine outside of ceviche. Does anyone have any favorite Peruvian places or is it not one of the city’s strong suits?

Another Lunch’er posed this same question a little over a month ago, and there just aren’t any Peruvian places in Midtown.  Which sucks, because I could really go for some Lomo Saltado (Peruvian dish of beef sauteed with tomatoes, onions and french fries).  What we do have, however- is some delicious ceviche!  My favorite, after the jump…

The shrimp ceviche at El Rincon del Sabor.  It’s Ecuardorian, not Peruvian- but still delicious, and a steal at under $10.  Almost as good as the mixed seafood ceviche I had this past weekend at the Ballfields in Red Hook this past weekend…

That version was actually Chilean.  If you haven’t been to the Ballfields yet, what are you waiting for?  It’s not in Midtown, but if you read this blog, chances are you like Central & South American food- and the stands at the Ballfields are the cheapest, best place to get it in New York City.  For more info on the ballfields, the Pork Chop Express has everything you need to know.

  • The best Peruvian eatery, although it’s not in midtown, has to be Flor De Mayo on Amsterdam on the UWS. Great seasoned chicken (pollo) and I think they put some highly addictive ingredient in their Lomo Saltado (beef, rice, tomatoes, unions, and french fries). It’s a Peruvian-Chinese restaurant, but the Chinese dishes are average.

  • SANDWICHES!!

  • Where can I get a good sammich in midtown? Sub style.

  • Diddy Reese rocks and would be a gold mine in Manhattan.

  • “Tacos enchiladas” at that taco place means tacos with spicy pork.

  • amanda – what’s your favorite place to get a sandwich in midtown?

i’ve suddenly got a hankering for a big fat rueben.

  • Loving the midtown Sandwich’s Amanda.

  • Hey maybe we could meet for a sandwich one day i work midtown too!!!!

  • (Not enchiladas… Tacos enchilada, spicy pork tacos… Mmmmmmmm)

    Big Fat Reuben: Bergers on 39th x 5th isnt bad… Sarges on 3rd x 36th (?)

  • Hmmm…don’t really have a favorite sandwich in midtown actually. All my favorites are out of bounds (bahn mi, Columbine in Tribeca, City Sub in Brooklyn). Though Dishes has a good turkey and goat cheese when you feel like being a big spender. Or those million dollar sandwiches at Starwich?

Best midtown sandwich = rice ball? Or tacos enchiladas? (Thanks other posters for clarifying, it is the spicy pork, only way to go)

  • Toasties (48 between Madison and 5th) has some AWESOME sandwiches. $6.50 and they are scrumptious and HUGE

  • that would be me who was looking for Peruvian food in midtown last month, unfortunately, it’s not a pretty picture around these parts (I’m on 42nd and 6th).

Two places I’d recommend are Pio Pio Riko in Greenpoint, and Lima’s Taste in the W. Vill. Pio is cheap, kinda dirty, but their ceviche dishes are enough to feed a family of 4. Lima’s is more expensive, smaller (but still good sized) portions, nicely decorated, and quite tasty.

  • I’m a lil confused by what you mean by ceviche; the first picture isn’t quite what I think of as ceviche…?

  • Props to Amanda for giving City Subs their due respect! I freaking love that place.

Yvo – IMO the ceviche at El Rincon del Sabor eats kind of like a gazpacho with shrimp in it, but regardless of what you call it, it’s damn delicious.

  • Ugh it looks like both of the ceviches in those pics are loaded with cilantro… *gags*

  • Amanda! You can get so much veggie indian food here in NYC tho! All you have to do is come a little bit south of midtown down to my workplace neck of the woods– curry hill! Its a much shorter jaunt for lunch than going all the way to LA for sure! Can I recommend the lunch buffet at Chennai Garden? Also, sandwiches! Chilean food! Where can I get chacararos for lunch outside of astoria? I think I might have asked this before but I refuse to let that dream die.

  • Tandoori Chicken Tikka on fresh Naan with Cucumber Raita And Coriander(yes marge, cilcantro!!!) a little Goan chilli and a nice, very cold Chilean shiraz.

That’s my supper.Sadly no footy on telly :(

  • Hey Rudy, speaking of football- who is your team, so I know who to root for Aston Villa to destroy this season? I’m assuming it’s a London club… hopefully West Ham or Everton, in which case mission already accomplished.

  • Kati Roll is nearyby, no? Cheap Indian, sandwich form (if you call wraps sandwich).

I love it when tasty thing fit in the palm of my hand.

  • Everton are a liverpool based team.

    My team is Liverpool,infact, and we twated you(villa) 2-1 @ anfield :)
