When my brother had a work assignment for a few months in Belgium, I did not take the opportunity to go visit him. After my brother returned and began extolling the virtues of waffles from the Belgian city of Liège, I began to regret passing up the chance to experience this Belgian delicacy firsthand.
Fortunately, Bonté Wafflerie and Café offers the Liège-style waffle in town with two locations in Center City (130 South 17th Street and 922 Walnut Street). Bonté is open from breakfast until 6 p.m., serving as a coffeehouse in the morning and sandwich/salad/soup the rest of the day. I finally sampled the waffle while grabbing lunch, and I’m not sure why I waited so long to try it.

First John went to Underdogs, then I went to Maui’s Dog House. This week, for Wiener Wednesdays it is a hot dog special in Northern Liberties.
Unlike Underdogs or Maui’s, Cantina Dos Segundos specializes not in hot dogs, but in Mexican food. On special, however, is the Mexican hot dog. I had heard good things, and needed to try it for myself.
Last week I told you guys about my last meal before Passover, as big Italian sandwich from Sarcone’s. I needed some serious carbs to break the week of no “chamatz” (bread products, including noodles). It looks like I make a habit out of ending Passover with Asian noodles; 2 years ago I broke with Nan Zhou and this year Pho 75 fit the bill.
Pho 75 is located at the corner of a Viet shopping plaza on Washington Avenue. Whereas Pho Hoa has a book for a menu, Pho 75 has a single page and its pho only. Pho, things to put in your pho, and drinks, nothing else. But unlike Pho Hoa, Pho 75 nails their one menu item.
I wanted to do a little pork taste testing in the North of Kensington area, comparing El Principe, a Dominican restaurant I enjoyed a while back, to Isla Nena, a Puerto Rican spot the next block over. Isla Nena’s slogan “sabor Boricua pa’que tu lo sepas” let us know to expect authentic Puerto Rican food. Two steam tables are on your right when you enter, but there are tables in the back for waiter service. On the menu you will find fried side dishes and meat and seafood entrees.
