3 Meats is the Right Amount at M Kee

M Kee opened last fall in Chinatown with a noodley and roast meat filled menu. The entrance shows off all the roast delicacies, so I couldn’t begin to think about ordering anything other than meat over rice.  Although I was warned that 2 meats were enough for me, I had to push it to the limit and order 3.

My platter looks kind of gorgeous, no? My 3 were, from top to bottom, duck, spareribs, and roast pork. The chopped meats were placed on a layer of bok choi over rice. The plate cost $7. The M Kee guys were right in saying this was too much for one person, but I was happy to have the 3 to sample from.

Though they weren’t super meaty, my favorite of the 3 were the spareribs. The lacquered meat crackled under my teeth.  The pride that M Kee has in its roast meats is apparent in its roast pork, whose flavor and texture is miles beyond that which is served at your average take 0ut joint. The duck was my least favorite of the 3, it was all bones and fat and the skin was not crisp enough. As I left I noticed the hanging meat I should have replaced the duck with, roast “pig”, not to be confused with roast pork, it looked like some sort of crispy skin chicharon. Can anyone confirm that the roast pig tastes as awesome as it looks?

    roast pig is usually pork belly that has been roasted with the skin very crisp indeed. That is for sure a good bet, and worth another trip back

    Chinese 101 Class:
    – roast pork = char siu
    – roast pig = siu yuk

    Char Siu is what you ordered Jamie, its just strips of pork slow roasted at a low temp. Its also sometimes stashed in buns as found in Chinese bakeries.

    Siu Yuk is the entire pig, as JMonksy mentions this results in crispy skin (as the fat underneath essentially help fry the skin)

    Just worth calling out, M Kee was opened by some folks who left another ML fav Sang Kee. Oh and their wontons are now my favorite in Philly…
