Less Sun in the Sky, More Pasta on my Plate

When South Street’s high-quality grab and go spot, The Quick Fixx, opened, Luncher John stopped by and was impressed with the gnocchi and flatbread. I have been staying away from the heaviness of pasta for most of the summer. As the unbearable heat has passed, I had a craving for something a little more rich.

Hot Diggity’s New Sides Can’t Trump the Hot Dogs

Labor Day weekend is approaching. That puts me in the mood for classic American eats. Until I can have my Dad grill up some hotdogs to a perfect crisp, Hot Diggity on South Street satisfies my American needs. I love their treatment of Sabrett dogs. Last week, they added new menu items, including side dishes and burgers. A good excuse to head over.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit on South Street

At the end of February, Philly’s South Street saw the arrival of Texas BBQ chain Dicky’s.  When I walked in the staff was really friendly and attentive to all customers, some real southern hospitality to set the mood. The small space clearly has a fast food vibe to it,  so it was hard to be super optimistic about what sort of bbq they were packaging up for our to-go order. On the other hand, Dickey’s has its Texas roots and some smokers in the back.  There are 9 types of meat on Dicky’s menu. We sampled 4 and found a clear winner.

Paratha Wrapped Kebabs From Kabobeesh on South St

Kabobeesh’s quirky, aluminum  West Philly location impressed me with its Pakistani style fried chicken last year. After 10 years of success in the area, the team recently opened up a location off of South Street. It has a more generic look to it, but the menu is similar. I didn’t eat an entire chicken this time.

Weekday Brunch at Ants Pants Cafe

I get around. Yesterday, I recommended Southern Inspired bourbon house The Twisted Tail, located about as east as you can go off of South Street. Today, I am on the other end of South Street,  at Ants Pants Cafe, whose inspiration is also Southern in a sense.  This spot has been bringing the Australian cafe experience to Grad Hospital since 2004. Though they recently started dinner service, Ants Pants has been more of a brunch place, serving eggs in various forms 7 days a week.

Pumpkin Market’s Local Banh Mi

Pumpkin restaurant on South Street is a classy “farm to table” style joint, with beautiful looking food that I can’t really afford. Next door, at Pumpkin Market, the sandwiches, soups, and salads are more accessible, but keep with the local wherever possible concept.  Order at the counter and seat yourself in the small downstairs area or outside in the mini garden abutting South Street. You may be a foot away from exhaust engines, but position yourself so you can focus on the cuteness of the flowers and herbs surrounding you.

Burgers at Miles Table, Half Off on Wednesdays

Miles Table opened a few months ago on 16th and South, with the goal of being accepted as a neighborhood spot with its self proclaimed “where the neighborhood eats” slogan.

As for the menu, you are looking at  breakfast served all day, sandwiches, salads, pizza. Recently, Foobooz spread the word that on Wednesdays, Miles does a 1/2 off burger deal. Seemed like the right incentive  to get me over there.  Order at the counter and your meal is brought to you. Outdoor seating is available and it is BYOB.
