Improve Your Mann Center Visit with Jamaican Chicken Platters

I have been picnicking pretty hard this summer; casually eating outside is one of life’s simple pleasures. Making my way over to a Mann Center performance, I wanted to pick something up nearby to make a little picnic to go along with the classical music and BYO summer friendly white wine we brought. The area by the Mann Center is rich with tiny, Caribbean and Jamaican spots.  I picked two of them, right across the street from each other, just north of the 52nd Street subway stop.  Both had similar set ups, a counter to order large platters from and a few tables to sit at.

Pasta Platters from Foods on First

Foods on First on Arch Street is pretty easy to walk by. I stopped in because I confused it with the place next door offering fried chicken. But once I was inside and realized my error, I already sort of felt like I had to go with it. I was the only one inside and it felt wrong to walk out, plus I figured I could find something worth eating.

Besides a slew of sandwiches, they had a list of pasta specials for lunch. I so rarely order pasta, that I was tempted.

Pick Up the Chicken Wings, Mac & Cheese, and Chocolate Handpies at West Philly’s Wishbone

I enjoy chicken, but I really love fried chicken.  When the quick stop fried chicken spot opened last fall in University City, I had every intention of scooting over there. I took me a little while, but I finally got there. Fried chicken, served as boneless white or dark meat or as wings is ready under a heat lamp for $8.95 a pound. Chicken sandwiches, sides, desserts, and  funky sodas make up the rest of the menu.

Bonchon Chicken is Coming to Chinatown

My friend Earl just posted this picture that we should all get excited about.

Bonchon chicken is one of the first and biggest Korean Fried Chicken chains, though not all of their locations are equally fabulous in my opinion. However, this is still going to be a big win for Philly. Besides Cafe Soho, which is super far, we don’t have many options, though I do like the versions at Rice and Mix and  Koreana.

The Bonchon Facebook page gives us some information, like the address (1020 Cherry Street), but no opening date yet.

Spice End Indian Lunch Box

When  Spice End first opened, I ran over to check out the kati rolls and was pretty pleased, especially by the lamb kebab. On my revisit, almost exactly a year later, I intended to try a Spice End platter. However, the new 1 year anniversary lunchbox  caught my eye- a kati roll and biryani for $7.50. It is available Monday-Friday, during lunch.

Chinese-ish Lunch Specials at Jane G’s

Chinese food west of Broad street is usually a bad idea.  Although I was pretty skeptical of Jane G’s, the new lunch combos looked somewhat decent and was a closer walk compared to Chinatown.

Must Try: Koreana Wings

A few years ago, Luncher Nick told us about his superior parking lot  lunch from Koreana (he had the bibimbap and jabchae). I visited for my first time and tried some of the other items from their fast- food- meets- traditional Korean menu.
