PROFILE: Philly Luncher “Tom”

As is customary at Philly Lunch, every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Philadelphia. This week it’s Tom who loves Italian food and has eaten sandwiches all over the city.

Name: Tom

Age: 26

Occupation: Grad Student and Law Clerk

Where in Philly do you Work?: School on North Broad, work in Center City

Favorite Kind of Food: Italian, all different kinds of sandwiches (Roast Pork, Roast Beef, Pulled Pork, Cheesesteak, Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak, Italian Hoagie, Sausage and Peppers, Meatball, Chicken Cutlet), Burgers, Pizza, BBQ, Mexican, Chinese, Greek

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Philly: (places and dishes): Everything at John’s Roast Pork (Weccacoe and Snyder) and Paesano’s (either location), DiNic’s (Reading Terminal) Tony Luke’s (Front and Oregon), and Jake’s Sandwich Board (12th and Sansom). Cheesesteaks at Chink’s and Steve’s in the Northeast and Geno’s.

Hoagies at any Primo, Sarcone’s (9th and Fitzwater), and Chickie’s (10th and Federal). Everything at Sweet Lucy’s BBQ in the Northeast and Bebe’s Barbecue (if it ever comes back). Beef combo on the outs at Nick’s (20th and Jackson) The burgers at Butcher and Singer (15th and Walnut), Royal Tavern (937 East Passyunk), Village Whiskey (20th and Sansom), Good Dog (15th and Locust), and PYT. Pizza at Slice (either location), Stella (2nd and Lombard) and Joe’s Brick Oven (16th and Sansom). The falafel cart on 20th and Market, gyros at South Street Souvlaki (5th and South), three pepper chicken at Szechuan Tasty House (9th and Arch).

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? At school, it’s probably the Noshery or Koja since the options are so limited. On the weekends and in the summer, any of the hoagie places listed above, DiNic’s and Paesano’s. Although I’d probably go to John’s everyday if it wasn’t so inaccessible.

Place you discovered thanks to Philly Lunch (if any) The $6 kobe burger at CHOPS and Mexico on the Square

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Either Italy or the kitchen at Paesano’s or John’s.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Philly Lunch readers? Where should I go to spice things up at Reading Terminal? I feel like I wind up at DiNic’s or The Rib Stand (if it’s open) every time. And where can I find a good breakfast sandwich in Center City?

Since it seems you love a good sandwich, I would suggest checking out Beck’s Cajun in Reading Terminal. If you are feeling wild, you can get an alligator sausage sandwich there. I’ll leave the breakfast sandwich question open, since I am more of a lunch girl.
