Potato House Truck Parks at Bryant Park, Serving Spuds to the Masses

Last week, I was making my way to Zeytinz for lunch when I spotted a new (at least to my knowledge) food truck parked along 40th, right across from Bryant Park. It was the Potato House truck, and this was the first time I had heard about Potato House at all, so I stopped and looked over the menu. They had the usual toppings, like chili, sour cream and broccoli, but they also had toppings like crab, seaweed and beets. Not sure what to think about this new cart, I continued on my way to Zeytinz and began searching the interwebs for any additional information I could find. There wasn’t much (aside from this early spotting back in Sept when they were just a cart), so with my Zeytinz sandwich in hand, I made my way to Potato House to see what it was all about.

Flatiron Lunch: The Whitefish Salad Taste-Off Continues

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

About a month ago, I decided selfishly to use my love of whitefish salad as a means to try different bagel shops in the area. This week, we continue our whitefish salad-crawl by working our way north on both the east and west sides of Flatiron Lunch. Where do FL’ers in the center of the FL zone get bagels?

Organic Avenue, The Place None of Us Have Been Waiting For, Appears Near Bryant Park

As I was walking towards Bryant Park this week, I noticed an unfamiliar sight – a new storefront on 40th between Broadway and 6th Ave. I looked up at the sign and read the name, Organic Avenue. Now, if you lie awake at night thinking that there’s been a serious lack of kale in your diet, and you just can’t physically imagine going more than a few days without your necessary dosage of sunflower falafel, then you are the type of person who is going to love Organic Avenue.

For everyone else, like those of us who like meat, and eating from places that don’t advertise about Community Cleanses, which, according to Organic Avenue, is “a way to meet new people, share health goals, and cleanse with a group”, then please just disregard this entire post.

Jacques Torres Pops Up in Grand Central (Cafe Grumpy Coming Soon)

We got word that a pop-up location of chocolate maker Jacques Torres was opening yesterday in the Lexington Passage of Grand Central Terminal. For whatever reason, the shop had an “opening soon” sign on the door late in the day, but the inside looked ready to go- so we’re assuming they’re open today. The pop-up will be open throughout May, then closed for renovation until August when the space will reopen as a permanent fixture.

But wait, there’s more!  Read more »

Flatiron Lunch News: Cafe el Presidente Opens and Mad. Sq. Eats Returns

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Earlier this week, Cafe el Presidente opened to the public. In theory, they are open from 7am to midnight, but when I walked by the other morning, it was completely empty other than a few kitchen staff and their website currently seems to indicate they are only open for dinner now. You might have noticed, they have been getting a ton of press (here, here and here.) I am happy to have a place to buy fresh tortillas and some Mexican groceries and grab a drink and taco after work in the neighborhood, but I am having trouble wrapping my head around the menu and prices. The meat dishes that come in a platter of four make-your-own-tacos range in price from $11.95 to $14.95 (to market price), which is reasonable. But the pastor with queso single taco is $7.95. Either way, I think we are going to have to all agree to not judge these prices against a Queens taco cart. But I like their attempts at authenticity compared to all of the “$5 Nacho” Mexican take-out spots in the neighborhood.
